“Don’t worry,” Victor promised. I’d almost forgotten he was here in all the chaos. “We will ensure they get to safety and that should the worst happen, the alpha does not escape. This ends today.”

“Thank you,” I said, glad he put my fear into words. My focus shifted to my mates who had all moved to my side now. “Are you ready?”

No one answered. There were no real words for a moment like this. They met me with determination and

‘We’ve got this,’I told them, this time our mind link. Now that I was focusing on them, our bond flared brightly again. I held onto the feeling for dear life as I ascended the stairs. We fought hard to get to this point, but I knew this was going to be our biggest battle yet. One that we couldn’t lose… no matter the cost.

ChapterTwenty

Vanya

The Grave Alpha was waiting for us as we walked into the main room. He was sitting in a high-back chair like it was some kind of throne. He didn’t bother to stand as we approached, like he was unaffected. A large mirror showed Victor and his men helping my sister and her mates. He’d watched everything unfold, and still looked this unaffected. At this point, it went beyond ego and straight to delusion.

As I looked into another mirror, I could see the entire pack lands below. The victims were led back to the gates where our healers waited. His guards were completely gone except for those helping carry out the survivors.

He was looking at the ruins of the empire that he thought he built, completely unfazed.

“This is a thing,” Callum said. “When an alpha like you thinks that he’s gaining power and making waves in our world, it always ends the same. You bring destruction and death. And just in the span of an hour or two, your entire pack has fallen.”

“How does it feel?” I asked. “To fail so miserably.”

At this point, I just wanted a reaction.

“Just imagine falling at the hands of the girl who kept slipping through your fingers.” Leven laughed, the sound booming in the silent room.

A flash of anger and fury flared in his eyes and he finally stood, pushing off of the chair hard enough that it slammed to the floor with a resounding crash. Not one of us flinched. We stood shoulder to shoulder, facing off with him in a show of our own power.

“I won’t go without a fight,” he promised. He was like a cornered animal, ready to fight with a desperation only impending death could bring.

“We’ve already killed your dark witch. Well, we didn’t, Meira did. It was well deserved,” I said.

“I assure you, she isn’t a loss.” He laughed, waving his hand to the back of the room. “I have my mates’ powers by my side. Your group will fall at my feet, begging for mercy. But there will be none.”

Three women were huddled together. I hadn’t even noticed them until now. They were chained just like my sister, and just like her, they were ready for a fight. Using each other for leverage, they all pushed to their feet.

“We’ve waited for this day for a long fucking time,” the one in the center called out. They glared at the man with a hate so raw I could feel it in the air. “We knew that death would be far better than life with you. Maybe in our next life we’ll have a chance at happiness.”

“No!” Nyx yelled. “This isn’t the way. We’re going to win.”

“Yes, you will,” she said gently. All three women were crying silently, holding something in their fists. The alpha moved forward and they slammed something in their mouths. They didn’t scream or put up a fight as they slumped to the floor, welcoming the escape of death with open arms.

“Your sacrifice won’t be in vain,” Holt promised them as his own tears joined theirs. My eyes burned and it took everything in me to keep it together. It was quick and I prayed, painless, the life draining from their eyes swiftly.

More senseless death.

The alpha fell to his knees with a thud, clutching at his chest and finally looking shaken for the first time.

“I imagine that losing a mate bond is like losing a piece of your soul. Too bad you never had one to begin with,” Callum said as he grabbed his dagger. That was all we needed to strike. Anger fueled my movements. He was going to pay for every bit of pain he caused.

There were six of us on to one man but desperation could make for a powerful warrior. He shifted and fought but it wasn’t long before my mates had him pinned down, not even bothering to shift as they took him down. He was weakened by his broken mate bond and cold resignation was all that was left in his eyes.

Callum stabbed a silver knife into his shoulder, rendering him immobile as it hit the wood below him and locked him into place. “This is the man who bought you, who caused all of this, what’s your move, Vanya?”

They were startled when I started to strip but I wasn’t going to face the aftermath naked and covered in blood.

As I stared at him through my wolf’s eyes, he was only a shell of the man he was before. I was glad he lost everything before he went, knew his defeat so it seeped into his soul and left nothing but a void behind. It was a fraction of the pain he’d caused, but it was satisfying, nonetheless.

“I hope they torment you in hell,” Holt said. “For everything you did to us. I hope you spend every minute of the afterlife in pure fucking agony.”
