“At least Dad’s lying led me to love.”

My father shifts uncomfortably in the doorway he’s lingering in.

“You know, for the first time in my life, someone wanted to take care of me. And someone wanted to love me. And my life…my life was actually about me! And maybe that makes me selfish, but I should get to be happy, too! With everything I’ve done and everything I give to this family, I should get to be happy, too!”

“You should,” Mom firmly agrees gathering all the attention in the room. “You’re absolutely right. You have spent so much of your time taking care of me…your father…your brother…yourself…that you haven’t gotten to enjoy what life has to offer. You have earned that, Zel. You should do whatever or be with whoever makes you happy.”

Tomas grumbles his disapproval, “Mom-”

“Enough, Tomas!” she chomps, successfully shutting his lips. “Your sister is a responsible woman. If she wants to be with some man who has shown her and this family nothing but generosity in spite of your terrible actions, then so be it.”

“You really mean that, Mom?” I turn my face to meet her stare, an object momentarily grabbing my attention in the process. “Do you really think I should do whatever makes me happy?”

“Absolutely.”

“Good,” the pair of scissors on her nightstand that she had been using for couponing catches my gaze again. “Because if I don’t get Elias back…the crown I’ve worn on my head for all these years will lie at their feet.”

Gasping is simultaneously done as is the question they all ask. “You’ll cut your hair?!”

“Every. Single. Strand.”
