He nodded. “Yes.”

“You don’t want to be with me anymore?”

“Of course I do, but you’re not happy with me anymore. I can feel that shit.”

She sniffled, continuously blinking back tears. “It’s not that I’m unhappy with you, Elite. I’m unhappy with myself. The way my life has turned out. You and the girls, you’re the only part that I’m happy about, but I can’t lie and say if, given the chance, I wouldn’t do a lot of things differently.”

“Tell me how you feel.”

Sighing, Jacintha wiped her face of quickly fallen tears. “I just… feel like I haven’t had the chance to live for myself. You know my parents were extremely possessive and overprotective, so I didn’t really have fun as a child or while in college. Then I had the girls, and my twenties were spent going to school and working and being a mother. Then I got married and… I just don’t know who I am or what I want out of my life. I can admit that I haven’t expressed that to you clearly, and if that made you feel like you were doing something wrong, I apologize. It’s just hard for me to care about the state of our marriage when I’m so miserable within myself.”

“Then I think we need to divorce so you can put you first and live the life you want.”

“But I don’t want to lose you. What about counseling to see if separation can help? Maybe if I had some time apart and away from my responsibilities, I could figure things out for myself. My parents have already asked if they can take the girls to Orange Beach for spring break. Maybe I’ll just spend a week or two alone and see what comes to me in solitude.”

Elite considered her suggestion. While he was willing to try to work on his marriage, he didn’t want to waste any more time.

“If you feel like counseling and us focusing on ourselves will be beneficial, I can agree to that, but if it doesn’t seem like it’s working, I’m going to take the lead and file those papers.”

“Okay. I can agree to that.”

“Cool. I’m about to head out. I guess I’ll see you later.” Standing, Elite walked over to her and placed a kiss to her forehead before telling her, “I love you.”

Before he could walk away, Jacintha was grabbing his hand as she stood.

“I love you too,” she replied, wrapping his arms around her waist. “Gimme some sugar.”

Smiling with one side of his mouth, Elite gave her a kiss. He had no idea how things were going to play out between them, but he couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t happy that Jacintha wanted to try to make things work.

??????

When they finished their conversation earlier, Elite wasn’t expecting Jacintha to call and ask him to come home. Fearing the worst, he canceled his plans for the evening to check on his wife. Had she decided she no longer wanted to work on their marriage? He honestly had no clue what he was about to walk into.

What Elite wasn’t expecting were the rose petals in the hallway leading to their room. At the sight of them, he was able to relax… even smile. He opened the door, and the sound of Kem playing in the background was his first greeting. Jacintha wasn’t in sight, but there were more rose petals on the floor and bed. Several candles were lit, and she had his favorite rolling tray with a small bag of weed with two cigars next to it.

Chuckling, Elite shook his head. On the nightstand, there was her favorite charcuterie board from Feast and Graze, along with that sweet ass Stella Rosa wine she loved to drink. And on the right side of the bed, she had a massage table with oil resting on top of it.

“Hey.”

At the sound of Jacintha’s voice, Elite’s head turned toward the bathroom.

“Damn,” he mumbled quietly at the sight of her.

She was dressed in a peach-colored silk gown that didn’t leave much to his imagination.

“Thank you for coming home,” she said, making her way over to him in the six-inch clear heels he loved to see her in.

“What’s goin’ on?”

Jacintha wrapped her arms around him. “I didn’t like how it felt hearing you say I’m unhappy with you.”

“Jah…”

“I needed to hear it, though, because it made it impossible for me to ignore how you feel. All I was concerned about was myself, but I didn’t take into consideration how my issues were making you feel.”

“It doesn’t matter. I’m your husband. It’s my job to cultivate you and make you better.”

“Yeah, but it’s some things I just have to do on my own, Elite. We are different. We don’t like a lot of the same things, but that was never an issue for us in the beginning because we did our own things but made sure we took time for each other. I know we both like massages, so I figured tonight we could rub each other down and spend some intimate time together. Really, I just wanted to do something to let you know I appreciate you giving us a real chance. What do you think?”
