Supreme’s head shook as he licked and sealed the blunt. “Honestly, bro, the why don’t matter. Ain’t shit she can say to justify not just cheating on you but fucking another nigga raw and telling you about the baby. No matter what problems y’all were having, that’s never an excuse to cheat. If she was feeling like you weren’t taking care of her wants or needs, she should have just said that shit.”

Elite released a heavy sigh. “I know that’s true, but it’s going to fuck with me until I hear the full truth.”

Supreme lit the blunt and took a few puffs before handing it to Elite. “You good, nigga? If so, I’ma head downstairs.”

“Yeah, I’m good. I ’preciate you letting me come over to vent and shit for the night. I booked a room until I figure this out.”

“Ain’t no rush in you leaving,” Supreme said, and Elite nodded, but he’d already made up in his mind not to stay for more than a night. His brother had a wife, and Elite refused to impose. Plus, he wanted time to get his mind right, and he’d need to be alone to do that. “Plus, you know what I’ma say.” Supreme shrugged. “You need to put Jah’s ass out. I’on give a fuck about you feeling bad over choking her ass either. She cheated, so she needs to go.”

Supreme’s serious expression made Elite chuckle. “I thought about that, but I wouldn’t want to stay there without her. Too many memories. If I kept the house, I’d just sell it.”

At the sound of the doorbell, both brothers looked toward the door as if they could see through it. Elite checked the time on his phone, noting it was a little past midnight.

“Who the hell popping up at my spot this late at night?” Supreme asked to no one in particular as he pulled his own phone out of his pocket. He opened his phone and checked the app for the camera at his front door.

“Who is it?” Elite asked, putting out the blunt and standing to his feet.

“Two police officers.”

As they knocked on the door, one of them yelled, “Memphis Police!”

“I know that bitch ain’t send them boys after you?” Supreme asked, opening the door.

“Shit, I wouldn’t be surprised.”

Elite followed his brother downstairs but stepped in front of him to open the door. He looked from one officer to the other, refusing to believe they were there just because he’d choked and pushed his wife. Jacintha had always been dramatic, though. There was no doubt in his mind she’d called the police and let them know there was a good chance he’d be at his brother’s house.

“Yeah?”

“We’re looking for Elite Benson,” the heavier set brown-skinned officer announced.

“For what?”

“Are you Elite Benson?”

“Yeah.”

With one bob of his head, he stepped forward and began to read Elite his Miranda rights while Supreme asked the other to see the warrant. As he was handcuffed, Elite shook his head and chuckled. He wanted to be angry, but a part of him felt like this was what he deserved. When he first realized Jacintha cheated, he should have left to calm down. Under no circumstance was it okay for him to put his hands on her, but he still couldn’t believe she’d actually called the police. He didn’t think he’d choked her hard enough to even leave a bruise, so why in the fuck was he being arrested?

“I’ma bond you out as soon as I can,” Supreme assured. “You know my number by heart?”

“Yeah.”

“Aight. Call me after you’re processed.”

Nodding, Elite hung his head as he was escorted out of his brother’s home. When he first arrived, he didn’t think his day could get any worse or that there was anything Jacintha could do to top cheating on him and getting pregnant by another man. As his heart hardened, Elite accepted the fact that her snitching topped her previous betrayal… tenfold.

??????

As Supreme drove, Elite stared at the picture of Jacintha that he’d been sent. Apparently, she was on Facebook talking about how he beat her. The bruises on her face, neck, and body hadn’t come from him. One of her eyes was swollen shut, her bloody nose was crooked, and her lips were cut and swollen. There were purple and black bruises all along her arms, stomach, and thighs. At first thought, Elite tried to convince himself that Jacintha had inflicted the pain upon herself, but the more he studied the picture, the less he believed that could have been the case.

He ended up having to spend a week in jail before he was able to see a judge and get a bond. As soon as he did, Supreme bailed him out as promised. By the looks of the pictures, Elite was surprised he was able to get a bond at all. It could have been because he didn’t have any other charges on his record.

“Stop me by the bank,” Elite demanded. “I’ll get you a cashier’s check for the twenty-five.”

Supreme’s head shook dismissively. “Don’t worry about paying me back. Worry about why the fuck your wife trying to pin that shit on you.”

“I’ma worry about both.” Supreme’s laugh made him smile during a time where Elite otherwise had nothing to be happy about. “For real though. I’m not letting you give up twenty-five thousand for me. I’m paying you back ASAP.”
