Of course he was losing sleep. Look at what she’d done to them.

“I fucked up. I lost my baby, my husband, and I feel like I’m about to lose my mind.”

“I’m sorry about the baby,” he grumbled. “I know you wanted another child.”

Remaining silent, Jacintha inhaled a deep breath as her eyes watered. As a tear crept down her cheek, Elite’s thumb stopped it.

“I did, but the truth is I didn’t. I thought I wanted one because that’s all I’ve ever been—a wife and a mother, but another baby wouldn’t have given me the happiness and fulfillment I’ve been looking for.”

For seconds on end, Elite didn’t respond. When he cleared his throat and sighed, Elite ran his hand over his face.

“Fuck am I supposed to do with that, Jacintha?”

“Nothing, I… What are you here for?”

“I’m here because I just had to beat a nigga’s ass over that shit you posted on social media. He challenged me because he thought I was a weak ass nigga that beat women. It’s bad enough your scheme is driving away my business and got people looking at me differently. You need to take that shit down before you get someone killed.”

“I’ll take it down if you agree to give us another chance.”

Elite chuckled as he put space between them and stepped closer to the door. “What did you just say to me?”

“Let’s be real, Elite. You’re not going to just give me another chance to prove how sorry I am and how much I want to be with you. If you agree to give me another chance, I’ll take it down and tell everyone I lied about who attacked me, and I will drop the charges.”

“Charges?” he repeated. “There’s only one.”

Jacintha ran her fingers through her hair as she sighed. “Well, I talked to the detective today and he said the D.A. is trying to add a murder charge as well since I was pregnant. Fetal homicide.”

Elite chuckled and shook his head before punching the wall next to her face.

Jacintha yelped before quickly adding, “H-he doesn’t know if she will actually be able to, though, that’s why they haven’t tried to arrest you yet. He said there’s a great chance that the prosecutor won’t approve the extra charge, and it’ll help if I tell them you didn’t attack me. They will only charge you with it if they believe they can prove it and win the case.”

The anger that filled Elite when he first arrived seemed to dissipate, and that worried Jacintha more.

“Every day that passes… I hate you even more.”

“Elite…”

“What did I do to you to deserve this?” Jacintha hung her head, unable to face him as his eyes watered. “All I’ve tried to do was make us work, and you do this tome? You got more hate in your heart for me than the nigga that actually beat you and killed your child. How can you do this to me and think I would want toeverbe with you again?”

“I know I didn’t go about this the right way but…” She sniffled, looking up at him as her tears fell. “I was hurting and blinded by my anger, Elite. I’m really sorry. I’m going to fix this… okay?”

Not bothering to respond, Elite’s head shook as he walked away.

Whether Elite decided to give her another chance or not, Jacintha was going to do the right thing. She wanted fun and happiness and got it, knowing all the risks. Now that she was facing the risks instead of the reward, she’d own up to it and be the woman Elite first fell in love with. One who was loyal, loving, giving, and supportive. One who was real and pure, devoted to him in truth.

It took two weeks for Jacintha to be able to work up the nerve to reach out to Henry. She didn’t want to see him or even hear his voice. Now that she was removing her ego and anger, Jacintha cared less about what would happen to Henry at the hands of Elite and more about justice for herself and their baby.

Cheating or not, she didn’t deserve Henry’s brutal attack, and their baby for damn sure didn’t deserve to lose its life—in the hands of their father, no less. Elite told her she was hypocritical, not wanting him to go to jail for killing Henry but trying to put him behind bars for a crime he didn’t actually commit, and Jacintha was finally clear enough mentally to accept that truth. She’d decided first to try to let the police handle it. If they couldn’t, she would meet up with Henry with Elite and let him take care of it if he still wanted to.

After starting a voice memo on her iMac, she inhaled a deep breath and called Henry’s number. She’d texted him a few minutes ago and asked if he was free to talk, and to her surprise, he said yes.

“Wassup?” he answered, lowering the music in the background.

“Are you busy?”

“Yeah, so make it quick.”
