“Sounds good.”

Elite couldn’t say who moved closer first, but their lips found their way to one another. Wrapping his arms around her, Elite sighed against her lips as she cupped his neck and moaned softly. Pulling away, his head shook adamantly as he wiped his lips.

“I can’t.”

“I know,” Jacintha replied.

“Listen…”

The sound of beating against the door halted his words. Instinctively, Elite pulled Jacintha behind him. He knew that knock… even before they announced themselves. The thought of Jacintha setting him up briefly crossed his mind, but that thought left as quickly as it came. Opening the door, Elite looked from one police officer to the other.

“We have a warrant for Jacintha Benson’s arrest. Is she here?”

“What’s the charge?” Elite asked, blocking their view into the house.

“Filing a false police report.”

Sighing, Elite turned and looked at Jacintha. She nodded, pushing her shoulders back and holding her head a little higher.

“It’s okay. Let them in.”

He didn’t want to, but Elite knew he didn’t have that much of a choice. Now, he was wishing there was another way for Jacintha to have dropped the charges without admitting she lied. He wasn’t expecting them to press charges against her, but he shouldn’t have been surprised.

“I’m going to bail you out as soon as you get a bond, aight?”

Her head bobbed as one of the officers read her rights while the other placed her in handcuffs.

“She needs shoes and a coat,” he continued, closing the door.

“You can get it,” one of the officers granted.

Elite made his way upstairs to their old bedroom and grabbed her boots and coat. He took the time to write his number down along with his lawyer’s, just in case she wasn’t able to get an immediate court date and bail amount. When he made his way back down, they still had her cuffed. Shaking his head, Elite dropped the coat over her shoulders and back before lowering himself and helping her into her boots. He placed a quick kiss on her forehead and watched as they took her away.

When Elite realized they set Jacintha’s court date out for ten days, he tried to see if he could have the charge dropped another way. Since he was technically the victim, he hoped if he gave a statement that would work, but that wasn’t the case. The new prosecutor was trying her hardest to crack down on crimes of all levels, and she wasn’t willing to offer deals or drop charges on what she considered would be easy wins.

After Jacintha’s court date, she was given a bond, which Elite quickly paid to secure her release. It didn’t surprise him that she asked him to pick her up, and he agreed. Instead of going back home, she asked that he drop her off at her parents’ house, which was saying a lot. Typically, Jacintha avoided her parents when she was in some mess because she wanted to avoid hearing their mouths, so for her to want their comfort… that said a lot.

As Elite pulled into their driveway, it took everything in him to not offer to stay. She’d put herself in this position, and as much as he wanted to take this burden, it was hers to bear. All he wanted was for them to part ways and divorce in peace.

“You need anything before I go?” he asked, putting his Bronco in park.

“The day I got arrested…” She looked over at him. “What were you going to say?”

Elite chuckled. “Seriously, Jacintha?”

She smiled with one side of her mouth. “That’s all I’ve thought about for the past eleven days. What were you going to say?”

Elite went back to that moment and wondered if he wanted to be honest or give her a half truth.

“I was going to say…” He shrugged and looked out of the window. “Even though we can’t be together, I will always love you.”

Jacintha took his hand in hers and kissed it, forcing him to look into her eyes. “I will always love you too.” Her mouth opened and closed, but she remained silent.

As she pulled her hand out of his, Elite asked, “What is it? Say what’s on your mind.”

“I’m not going to fight the divorce and ask you to give us another chance,” she started, words gentle and slow. “And I won’t bother you or try to see you.” Twiddling her thumbs, Jacintha looked away briefly. “But if after you’ve healed you decide we’re worth a second chance, I promise I’ll do whatever you need me to do to make things right.”
