She gasped and grinned as she accepted them. “Are you trying to be more?”

“Right now, I’m just determined to get your number and have more than a two-minute conversation with you.”

Denali chuckled as she nodded. “That sounds good, too.” She lifted the roses to her nose and inhaled their scent. “These are beautiful, Elite. Thank you. And I’ve been waiting for you to ask for my number.”

“Had to build myself up to do it. Besides, I was sure you had a man.”

“Well, I am in a situation that’s proving to be kind of difficult to get out of, but I’m technically single.”

Nodding, Elite processed her words. “Your baby daddy?”

“Yep. I want to leave, and I have, but… life just keeps tossing him back at me.” She smiled, though her eyes watered, but she wouldn’t let a tear fall. “I definitely want to date, though, I’m just… trying to do what’s best for my kids too.”

“I can respect that. Just as long as you do what’s best for you as well. The happier you are, the better of a woman and mother you’ll be.” His eyes darkened and he looked away. “Besides, if I’ve learned anything recently, it’s that children are mirrors. They reflect and become or go against what they see in their parents. So you gotta ask yourself if the man you have around them is the kind of man you want your son to be and your daughter to be with.” His eyes returned to hers. “But that’s just my opinion.”

“I think it’s a very wise one, and you’ve definitely given me something to think about.”

“That’s not my way of trying to convince you to go out with me either,” he clarified, causing her to laugh. “I meant that shit, Denali. Do what’s best for you.”

That was the first time she’d heard him say her name, and at the sound of it, her heart skipped a beat. Unable to resist, Denali closed the space between them and wrapped her arms around his neck. As he held her close, she melted against him… loving how her body molded against his. Elite sighed as he buried his face in her neck, and she shivered as her nipples hardened.

“You feel good as hell,” he complimented in her ear before kissing it.

Pussy pulsing, Denali admitted, “So do you.” Not wanting to get too carried away, she unraveled herself from around him. “Take my number.”

“Aight,” he agreed, pulling his phone out of his pocket.

Once he had her number secured, he let Denali know he would shoot her a text so she could lock his in. They said their goodbyes, and she stood there with a goofy grin as she watched him walk away.

??????

That night, Denali was on a cloud from her interaction with Elite. Blaze sensed something was different about her, but she didn’t go into detail. He’d made it clear he wasn’t over her yet, and the last thing she wanted was for him to try to ruin her dating life before it fully began.

The next morning, she woke up to a missed call from Elite. Before returning it, she helped the kids get ready for school so she could drop them off, but as soon as they were out of the car, Denali was calling him back.

“Good morning, beautiful,” he answered, making her smile immediately.

“Oh, so I don’t get a ‘good morning, beautiful’ text? I get to hear it from your raspy morning voice?”

Elite chuckled. “I fell back asleep, but yeah. That’s what I’m on. I used to trip off that shit but when a woman is the first thing on your mind when you wake up… it makes sense.”

She was so caught off guard by his response that it took her a second to reply. Biting down on her bottom lip, Denali fought her smile.

“You’re saying I was the first thing on your mind when you woke up?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

“Aww…” she cooed, making him laugh again. “You’re sweet, Elite. I get a rough vibe from you too, but you’re really sweet.”

“I am rough. I hope you like that shit.”

Squeezing her legs together, Denali wondered if talking to him while she drove was a good idea.

“Whew. I might need to wait to call you when I get back home.”

“You’re worth the wait. And if I could be honest, I don’t really care to talk on the phone. I prefer face to face, one-on-one engagement.”

“I think that might be worst.”
