“Don’t I know it? Best investment in the house.”

Denali laughed as she stepped into the living room, and she was grateful that it was only a small amount of people there, all of which she knew. After greeting everyone, her eyes landed on Elite. She waved, thankful for the distraction of Cassie asking her what she wanted to drink.

“I’m good for now, Cas. Thank you.”

Making her way to where Nicole was seated, Denali gave her a hug.

“Why you ain’t over there with your man?”

Denali’s head shook as she avoided Elite’s eyes. “He ain’t really fucking with me like that.”

“Girl, please. I’ve known Elite damn near all my life. His ass wants yourealbad.”

Her head shook as she considered opening up to Nicole. She wanted to tell her she couldn’t tell, but decided against it. Very rarely did Denali participate in girl talk about her relationships, and she didn’t want that to change now. Even if she did, Elite kept her from replying when he said…

“Bring your ass here, Denali.”

Brows wrinkled, Denali tilted her head as she looked over at him. He looked good as fuck—as usual. Dressed in all black with his signature gold jewelry, Elite had a pair of Macklemore x Air Jordan 6’s on that had her breath hitching. If Amir saw those, he would have afit.

“Ask me nicely.”

Elite’s head tilted and eyebrows raised. “I ain’t gon’ tell you again.”

Denali licked her lips to hide her smile, but that didn’t work. Standing, she made her way over to him and stood in front of him.

“Would you like to go outside and talk?”

Elite stared at her for a few seconds before nodding and agreeing. Instead of taking her to the back, Elite led her to the front door. He didn’t waste much time once they made it out before saying…

“I don’t like to be ignored.”

“And I don’t like to be rejected.”

Sucking his teeth, Elite crossed his arms over his chest. “I didn’t reject you. I was respecting you.”

“Did I ask you to respect me? Because I would have preferred dick that night and respect in the morning.”

Elite laughed but tried to cut it off quickly by running his fingers down the corners of his mouth.

“I don’t know what the hell I’m going to do with you.”

“Whatever you want.”

He smiled and pulled her closer. “I like how you do that.”

“Do what?”

“Make me smile… a lot.”

Denali wrapped her arms around his neck. “I like the way it looks on you.”

“If you do, we need to address how we’re going to communicate better. I know you like to think shit through before you talk and I will respect that boundary, but I need you to actually say that. Don’t ignore me.”

“I can do that. I’m just so used to toxic communication and arguing that I try to avoid potential conflict with you. I never want us to handle each other that way.”

“We won’t as long as we communicate with love and respect.”

She left a few seconds pass before removing herself from his embrace. “Babe… I don’t know about this. I know we agreed to take things slow and see if we were a good fit, but I’m scared I’m going to like you more than you like me.”
