“You want some company?”

I nearly choke on my drink.

“That would be a hard no,” I finally manage to say.

“A hard no, huh? Not just no, but ahardno.”

“Glad to see we understand each other.”

“Did I mention I give a really good foot massage?”

“Did I mention it’ll be a cold day in hell before I ever let you touch my feet, or any other part of my body for that matter?” I fire back, a smile toying on my lips.

“Damn woman, you really know how to knock a man’s ego down a few pegs.”

“I’m sure your ego will be just fine.” I roll my eyes. “Besides, I’m sure there are plenty of other women that would be happy to keep you company tonight.”

“But those other women aren’t you.” He reaches for my hand that’s resting on the table, wrapping his long fingers around it.

I’d be lying if I said my heart didn’t kick up speed at that. Or that my palms didn’t dampen. Or that the heat suddenly crawling up my neck wasn’t threatening to spill across my face. But a quick inhale and I push past it. Slick lines for a man well versed in women.

“Sucks for them,” I manage to say, pulling my hand away.

“Come on, Hamilton. I promise we’ll have a good time.”

“And by that you mean I’ll end up in tomorrow’s TMZ spread?”

“I told you, they’ll go away once they see there’s no story.” He grins, relaxing back in his chair.

“Well, I can’t wait around for that to happen.”

“I don’t get the big deal. You’re single, are you not?”

“Yes.”

“So then who cares if a few pictures get posted on some sleazy website?”

“I care. You don’t understand my situation.”

“Then explain it to me.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“It’s just… it’s nothing.”

“If it’s nothing then why won’t you tell me?”

“Because I don’t want to, okay?” I sigh loudly.

Sure, I could tell him the truth. Tell him how a womanizing celebrity, much like himself, seduced my mom then threw her to the wolves when he was finished with her, but really, what would that accomplish? It may be part of my story, but it’s a part I don’t feel like I have the right to share. At least not with someone like him.

“Okay.” He stares at me intently for a long moment. “You know, there’s one way to ensure no pictures surface and we can still hang out…”

“You are not coming back to my place.” I laugh at the boyish grin that tugs at his mouth.

“You could always come to mine.”
