For a moment it all comes back.

The first time we met. The first time we kissed. The first time I sank so deep inside of her that the only thing I could feel was her. It feels like a lifetime ago yet like no time has passed at the same time.

I won’t deny that there’s something about her that still hits me like a bat to the face, but unlike the starstruckboythat blindly gave her my heart, I’m not stupid or naïve enough to fall for her shit now. She is the definition of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. Unfortunately, it took me way too long to see who she really is until I had no choice to.

Now when it comes to Brandy, my eyes are wide fucking open.

Even though we see each other at social events from time to time, I haven’t actually spoken to her in years. Hell, it’s been so long since shit went south between us that most people don’t even remember we were ever a thing. I wish I could forget it as easily as the media did.

“I thought that was you.” Her smile widens as she leans in. I stiffen when her lips graze my cheek. I have to resist the urge to push her away and simply wait for her to back the fuck up. “What are you doing on this side of town? Back to your old stomping grounds?” I let out a full breath when she takes a step back, holding my hand up to let Micah know not to approach.

“Something like that.” I clip. “You?”

“I’m meeting Harold over at Penny’s. We’re location scouting.”

“I see.” I rock back on my heels.

“Yeah, it’s going to be amazing. A tragic love story, one of those really emotional pieces. I’m actually really excited.”

“Good for you.” I blow out a puff of air.

Can someone say awkward?

Fuck that, how about brutal?

Yep, that’s what this is. Fucking brutal…

“You know I’m a sucker for a good romance.”

“I do. Pretty sure Jameson Fredrick remembers too.”

It’s a cheap shot. One I probably shouldn’t have taken. But what can I say, I’m petty as fuck sometimes.

“Trey.” She sighs around my name.

“Sorry, but I actually have somewhere I need to be.” I spin, eager to get the fuck out of here.

“Trey, wait,” she calls after me before I can take a single step.

“Fuck,” I mutter under my breath as I slowly turn back toward her.

“The movie that we’re scouting for, it’s actually something Harold wrote. He’s been auditioning for a lead male but so far can’t find anyone that fits the role. I hadn’t thought of it before but now, I don’t know, kind of seems like the universe is trying to tell me something.”

“And that something is what, exactly?” I grind my back molars together.

“That you should audition for the role.”

“Haven’t you heard? I’m Hollywood pariah right now. I doubt Harold would want me anywhere near his film.”

“Oh, stop. You know as well as I do that if you stay under the radar for a while, they’ll find someone else to villainize.”

“If anyone would know it would be you.”

Let’s just say that things got a little sticky for Brandy when she was caught having an affair with her married co-star, Jameson Fredrick, cue my earlier comment. Unfortunately, I was directly in the fallout of that too, though no one really cared about me, since I wasn’t nearly as well-known at that time, unless you were a baseball fan. Her, on the other hand? Well, let’s just say she got it bad. Though, given what she’d put me through, I was more than happy to sit back and watch the shit show she brought upon herself.

“I deserve that.” She looks down at her feet before once again meeting my gaze. “Listen, just think about it, okay. Harold doesn’t buy into all that Hollywood drama anyway. You’ve worked with him before. He’s all about the artistry.”

“Thanks, but no thanks.” I shake my head. As much as I need the work, not for money but for sanity, there is no way in hell I’m going to star in a role opposite this woman. I’d much sooner stab needles into both of my eyes.
