I drop my head back and let out a deep laugh that reverberates around us.

“Then I won’t say it out loud,” the words shaking with humor.

“In all seriousness, you seem like you’re actually starting to like the girl.” Her gaze travels to Clarke, who has her lean legs stretched out on the bench in front of her and her elbows propped on the bench behind her, large sunglasses on her face that’s turned up to the sky.

“She’s not as bad as I thought.”

“See.” She nudges my shoulder. “Told you a girl of substance would be good for you.”

“You mean my image,” I correct.

“Can’t she be good for both?”

“I don’t know what you’re playing at, Kat, but this isn’t going to turn into a thing.”

She gives me a look that unsettles me.

“Okay.” She fights a smile.

“I’m serious, Kat.”

“If you say so.”

“If you don’t stop smiling, I’m going to walk over there and call this whole thing off right now,” I threaten.

“Go on, then,” she challenges.

Two days ago, I would have followed through without a moment’s hesitation, but now, I can’t fucking explain it.

“Yeah.” She pats my shoulder. “That’s what I thought.” She steps past me, heading in the opposite direction of the bleachers.

“Kat,” I hiss, turning to follow after her.

“You know, it’s okay to admit you like her, right?” She throws me a sideways glance.

“Who said I like her?”

“You did.” She slides her sunglasses onto her face as we approach the parking lot.

“When?”

“When you kept glancing in her direction all day. It’s like you couldn’t take your eyes off her.”

“Maybe because I wanted to make sure she didn’t wise up and make a run for it.”

“Denial doesn’t look good on you.” She tisks.

“I’m only doing this because you’re making me. As soon as you give me the green light, I’m vapor.” I wave my hand through the air. “But if I’m going to be stuck in purgatory for the foreseeable future, the least I can do is have a little fun.”

“You know what they say about having fun…” Kat clicks her key fob, opening her car door the moment we reach it. “It’s hard to tell when the games stop and real life begins.”

“What the fuck does that even mean?”

“Something tells me you just might figure it out.” Which is absolute cryptic bullshit if I’ve ever heard it. While I’m trying to grasp what Kat is saying, she slides into her car, rolling the window down seconds after the engine purrs to life. “Relax, Trey. You’re secret’s safe with me.”

“What secret?”

She smirks, waving at me through the windshield as she backs out of her spot and quickly drives away without another word.
