“Let’s just say, I’ve noticed a change in Trey since you came into his life.” She tips her wine glass to her lips.

“What kind of change?” I can’t stop myself from asking.

“The life altering kind.” She smiles, her words sending my heart into an absolute fit as it begins to beat erratically against my ribs. “He may not admit it, but I can tell he’s falling for you.”

I swear I feel like my barstool has suddenly been flipped upside down and all the blood is now rushing to my head.

“He’s not alone in that,” I admit sheepishly, glancing back in his direction only to find him no longer there.

I once again search the room, looking for any sign of him, or Brandy, not able to shake the thought that they probably slipped off somewhere for a quickie. It’s believable, isn’t it? Knowing what I know about him and his past.

Maybe he just claims to hate Brandy as a cover. Maybe secretly he’s hoping this project will rekindle their relationship and I’m just a placeholder, someone to make Brandy jealous.

And while deep down I don’t believe that to be true, a part of me can’t help to let the doubt and insecurities seep in. How could they not?

“Have you told him?” Her question pulls my attention back to reality.

“Told him what?” I turn back to Kat.

“That you love him.”

My mouth goes bone dry. I lift my wine glass, taking a long drink, but it does nothing to soothe my tongue that now feels like it’s made of sandpaper.

“I never said…” I trail off.

“You didn’t have to.” She taps her temple with her index finger. “Anyone who cares to look can see it written all over your face.” She reaches out, patting my forearm. “Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.” She grins, looking back out at the room.

I watch her for a brief moment, curious that if she could see it so easily, does that mean Treyton can too?

Something about the shift in her expression has me looking around, my stomach bottoming out when I realize Brandy is walking toward us, her eyes firmly locked on me. I briefly look to see if Treyton is with her, but as soon as I realize he isn’t, I can’t stop my gaze from going back to her.

“Here we go.” Kat sighs.

The closer Brandy gets, the more beautiful she becomes. I’ve seen her enough in movies and magazines to know how beautiful she is, but something about seeing her in person makes it all too real.

Her silver dress sparkles under the dim lighting, accenting her slender figure. I swear, it’s like someone painted her, she’s that perfect.

This is what Treyton had. This is the only woman he’s ever committed himself to… And then there’s me.

Insecurity stirs stronger in my gut, and rightfully so.

There are people on this earth that look like her and Treyton, and then there’s people like me. Normal people who don’t roll out of bed looking like a runway model.

Her gaze slides to Kat as she gets closer and I watch the rehearsed smile tug at her pink painted lips. I recognize the smile because it’s one I’ve used several times before. The smile that says, even if I’m falling apart on the inside, you’ll never know it on the outside.

I dare to say most people in her position have perfected such a smile, Treyton included.

“Kat.” She leans in, giving Kat an unreciprocated, one armed, hug.

“Brandy.” Kat’s lips curl around the word.

“And is this your assistant?” She turns toward me, pinning me to the spot with her sharp gaze. “I’ve told Trey so many times that he needs to hire you one. I’m so glad he listened.”

“Is there a reason you’re pretending he talks to you?” Kat bluntly responds. “Because we both know he doesn’t.”

“We were just speaking.”

“Because he has no other choice than to acknowledge you. But don’t get used to it. We both know that once this film wraps, he’ll go back to pretending you don’t exist.”
