“Jesus that woman,” Kat says as a way to break the tension. “What did you ever see in her?”

“Your guess is as good as mine.” Treyton blows out a heavy breath, his arm slipping from my shoulders seconds before he’s standing in front of me. “I’m so sorry about that.”

“You don’t need to worry about Clarke.” Kat stands, her words vibrating with laughter. “She took care of herself just fine.”

With that, Kat walks away, leaving the two of us alone. Well, as alone as you can be in a room full of people.

“What’s she talking about?” His expression softens as he tips my chin upward.

“Nothing.” I shake my head.

“Spill, Hamilton.” He narrows his gaze.

“She tried to rattle me. She failed.” I shrug. “I may not be an aggressive person but when someone comes at me, I’m not one to tuck my tail and run.”

He laughs, the tension in his shoulders easing as he takes my wine glass and empties it in one drink, setting the glass behind me.

“Think I’ve witnessed that firsthand.”

“Have you?” I play coy, pretending to really think about it.

He leans in, propping his hands against the bar on either side of my head so that he has me caged in. “What do you say we get out of here?”

“Already?” My breath hitches when he leans in closer, rubbing his nose against mine. “We just got here.” I swallow hard.

“You want to stay?” He seems surprised.

“I wouldn’t say that Iwantto stay. But I also don’t want you to leave earlier than you should because you think I’m too rattled to stay.”

“See, that’s where you’re wrong. I don’t think you’re rattled. In fact, I don’t think anything rattles you.” He presses a soft kiss to my lips.

If only he knew how wrong he was…

“I wouldn’t go that far.” I smile against his mouth. Pressing my hand to his chest, I apply enough force that he gets the hint.

Pushing off the bar, he stands upright, straightening his jacket.

“Then you’re not seeing what I am.” He offers me his hand which I gladly accept, allowing him to pull me to my feet. “Besides,” he tugs me to his chest, his hand sliding up the side of my neck, “it’s more about me wanting to get you out of this dress than it is anything else,” he teases, kissing me again.

Being here with him is surreal enough in itself, but for him to be so affectionate toward me without a care in the world who sees, I feel like I’ve been placed smack dab in the middle of a movie. Because honestly, this can’t be real life.

Wrapping my hands around his neck, I kiss him back.

If he doesn’t care who sees, then why should I?

How differently my life suddenly feels.

It’s easier to pretend Treyton is just a normal guy when we’re in my condo, snuggled up in my bed or eating food on my living room floor, but here… Here, there’s no ignoring it. And while I’ve known it all along, I feel like I’m just now really digesting it. And I’d be lying if I said it didn’t terrify me. It does. But the thought of being without Treyton suddenly terrifies me more.

“So what do you say?” He breaks the kiss, smiling down at me. “You wanna get out of here?”

“And go where?”

“Anywhere that I can strip you bare and bury myself deep inside of you.” He trails his fingers down my arm, leaving a mess of goosebumps in their wake.

“Is that all you think about?” I tease.

“When you’re wearing something like this.” His hand finds my hip and he squeezes. “Can you blame me?”
