“I like it that way. I like being the one you get to experience these things with.”

“Me too.” I lift my face, kissing the back of his head.

It only takes us about twenty minutes to reach the lodge from where we departed. Abel carries me the whole way and never once complains or acts like he’s in any discomfort. Even though I can’t imagine it’s easy to carry someone on your back for very long.

Even though he did most of the work, when he slides me down to my feet my legs wobble slightly. I feel fine until I take a step back, then suddenly the whole ground goes sideways.

Before I know it, I’m on my side on the ground and Abel is standing over me with a terrified look on his face.

“Are you okay?” He crouches down, helping me into an upright position.

“I’m fine.” I brush the dirt off my legs and reach my hands out for him to help me up. “I just lost my balance. I think my legs are asleep from how I was positioned.” Such a lie.

“You sure?” He pulls me to my feet before leaning around me to brush off my backside.

“Yeah, I’m sure.” I force a carefree smile even though deep down I’m a little panicked.

“Come on. Let’s get out of here and grab a bite to eat. You’re probably starving.” He wraps a hand around my shoulder and tucks me against his side.

It’s been hours since we’ve eaten and even though I know I should feel hungry, I don’t. In fact, suddenly, I feel a bit nauseous.

Of course I tell Abel none of this because I don’t want to worry him. He’s already worried enough as it is. I refuse to add to that over something that is probably nothing.

Only if it’s nothing, then why am I so hell bent on hiding it from him?

I know the answer to that question without even having to ask it. Because deep down I know itissomething, and once he knows this little adventure of ours will be over and I’m not ready for that yet.
