“Is that so?”

“Maybe I’ve been waiting for you.” The instant the statement leaves my mouth she bursts into a fit of laughter, her breath fogging the cold air around us.

“Please tell me how many women you’ve gotten to fall for that line.”

“I wouldn’t know, I’ve never used it,” I tell her truthfully.

“Well put it in your back pocket because that one is definitely a keeper.”

“No, I think that’s a once in a lifetime line.”

“And he keeps going,” she says to herself, still laughing.

“You know, laughing at a guy who’s trying to tell you he’s into you is really kind of tough on the ego.”

“You’re into me, are you?” She looks down at her feet as she walks.

“I think I’ve made that pretty apparent, have I not?”

“I suppose.” She gives me a shy smile, and once again I’m left trying to get a handle on this girl.

She’s reserved and yet clearly adventurous. Outgoing and yet sweetly shy. She’s hesitant to say certain things but then has no problem calling me out the very next minute. She’s soft but strong. Open but definitely has a guard up. She’s like the perfect fucking contradiction in every single way possible.

“So, what about you?” I ask when she falls silent next to me, clearly mulling over my words.

“What about me?” she questions, meeting my gaze.

“What were you like in high school?”

“I’m sure you had kids at your school that always ate alone, walked through the halls with their heads down, and were basically invisible to everyone?”

She waits until I nod before continuing.

“Well, that was me.”

“I have a hard time believing that. I mean, look at you. There’s no way you didn’t have guys tripping over their feet to talk to you.”

“Try going to school wearing old, tattered clothes and having everyone know you’re the daughter of one of the town druggies. Trust me, the only guys interested in me were the ones that assumed I was easy like my mother.”

“That sucks. I’m sorry.” I let out a slow breath, not able to envision the picture she paints even a little bit.

“Don’t be. It is what it is.”

“So you didn’t have any boyfriends?” I ask curiously.

“One. Dean. We met senior year when we ended up in the same foster home. He came from a similar background as mine and we bonded over that fact.”

“So what happened?” I ask when she stops talking.

“We dated a couple months. I thought I had finally found someone real in a world hidden beneath masks. But alas, his mask was just a better fit.”

“That bad, huh?” I ask based on the way her forehead furrows.

“Try, he took my virginity and then a week later I caught him with his penis in another girl’s mouth. Turns out he had been seeing us both for weeks. Thankfully, I was back home with my mom by that time, so it was easy to cut ties, but it still...” she pauses. “It stung.”

“I can imagine it did.”

“It was good that it happened when it did. I learned a very valuable lesson.”
