“You two will find anything to argue over.” Adam shakes his head. “You sound like two teenage girls.”

“Because I care about what I put into my body I’m a teenage girl?” Andrew sneers.

I shake my head, my gaze locking on a blonde that enters the cafeteria to my right. Recognition is instant and I find myself standing, completely oblivious to the conversation taking place around me.

“I’ll be right back,” I mutter, not sticking around to hear what, if anything, my brothers have to say.

Crossing the cafeteria in record speed, I close in on her right as she reaches the coffee machines.

“Claire?”

She whips her gaze in my direction, surprise the first thing that registers across her pretty face.

“Abel.” She quickly recovers, an easy smile falling into place. “What are you doing here?”

“My mom had to have a procedure done. What about you?”

“I’m just visiting a friend.” She looks away and reaches for a coffee cup and proceeds to fill it. “Everything okay with your mom?”

“Yeah, I think so. Your friend?”

“I think so.” She adds some creamer to her cup.

“That’s good.”

“It is.” She pops the lid on her coffee and turns to face me. “Well, it was good seeing you again, Abel.” She smiles, shuffling her weight from one foot to the other. “I really should get back upstairs.”

“Yeah, you too,” I say, taking a step back so she can pass. “Have you talked to Finley recently?” I call after her before she’s taken more than a handful of steps.

She turns slowly, meeting my gaze.

“Yeah, why?”

“Is she doing okay? It’s hard to tell through text messages and since she pretty much refuses to talk to me on the phone.” I sigh.

“Don’t take it personally.” She smiles. I wouldn’t say Finley and Claire look alike–both are beautiful but in very different ways–but when she smiles it’s impossible not to see Finley’s smile. And her eyes. She has the same stark, green eyes as her sister. “She’s going through some stuff right now. But trust me, when she gets back you’ll be the first person she calls.”

“Is that so?” I can’t help the slow grin that falls into place.

“It is.” She gives me a knowing look. “I really need to get going.” She gestures toward the door. “It was good seeing you, Abel,” she says again.

“You too.” I nod, keeping my eyes locked on her until she exits the cafeteria and disappears moments later.
