“Hey.” Claire startles me when she suddenly appears in my doorway. “Someone looks happy.”

“Who?” I look around the room, laughing when my eyes swing back to her.

“I hate to bethatperson, but...” she pauses for dramatic effect. “I told you so,” she sings in a high pitched voice.

“No one likes a gloater.” I laugh. “But in this case I’ll let you get away with it.”

“You look like you’re about to float away.” She leans against the door frame.

“I feel like I’m about to float away,” I admit.

“He looked pretty happy, too.” She gestures down the hall. “You should have seen the smile on his face as he left.”

“God. How is it possible that he makes me so insanely happy and I barely even know him?” I pick up a spare pillow and cover my face with it.

“Sometimes people we know the shortest amounts of time have the biggest impact.”

“Are you getting all philosophical on me?” I drop the pillow onto my lap.

“I’m just saying, stop focusing on how short of a time you’ve known each other. In the grand scheme of things it really doesn’t matter. What matters is how you feel, and by the looks of things, I’d say you’re mad about this guy.”

“Mad about him.” I shake my head. “Claire, I love him.”

“I know.” She smiles.

“Am I that transparent?”

“Um, yeah.” She chuckles. “Now what do you say, love bird, how about I warm you up a little something to eat? You haven’t had anything since you left the hospital.”

“I’m not hungry.” I shake my head. “But thank you anyway.” I push out past a yawn.

“Okay, well then how about you try to get some sleep.”

“I’m so tired but I feel so wired I’m not sure I could fall asleep if I tried.”

“Love is the perfect drug,” she says knowingly.

“It really is.” I sigh, feeling so happy I swear I could burst wide open.
