“He didn’t think you’d approve,” I find myself admitting... Stupid booze. Someone should put a muzzle on me before I say more than I should. It’s not my place to tell Brennon how Atlas feels. That’s his job.

“Atlas is his own worst enemy. Shit with his parents, even though he’d never admit it, it really messed him up. He doesn’t do love...” He lets the statement hang. “Haven’t you ever wondered why he goes through girls the way he does?”

“What are you saying, that he’s incapable of love?”

“No, I’m saying he doesn’t feel capable of being loved.”

I swear if my heart weren’t already laying in a million pieces in my chest, it would shatter right in half.

“Brennon,” I breathe, not really sure how to respond to that.

“Do you care about him?”

“I do.” It feels way too good to admit, yet is surrounded by an air of sadness because I know it doesn’t matter if I do. Atlas made his choice.

But then why did he show up at the club tonight? Why did he lose his shit when he saw me with that other guy? His behavior is not indicative of a man who doesn’t care.

A tiny bud of hope sprouts.

“Then be patient with him. He’s going to do everything he can to push you away.”

“Why?”

“To prove to himself that you’ll stay.” He gives me a soft smile, patting my forearm. “Get some sleep.” He stands.

“Brennon.” I stop him as he rounds the chair. “You really are the best brother. You know that, right?”

“And don’t you forget it.” He smiles and winks, disappearing down the hallway moments later, leaving me alone to obsess over everything he just told me until sleep finally takes me under.
