“I still can’t believe Rita’s the girl he’s been crushing on. Like seriously, what are the odds? She told me about this guy she was interested in, but never in a million years did I consider it would be my brother.” I shake my head. “Though I can definitely see why he’s interested in her. Seriously.” I throw my hands up in the air. “Some people just get all the luck... Or looks, as it were.”

“She’s okay.” Atlas shrugs, plopping down on the couch next to me, our legs brushing as he does.

“What do you mean, she’s okay?” I snort. “Did you look at her? She’s freaking gorgeous.”

“She’s pretty, I won’t deny that. And before you ask, yeah, I would definitely fuck her.”

“Atlas.” I ball my fist and punch his leg.

“What? It’s true.” He laughs, the sound full and thick as he tucks my hand in his to keep me from hitting him again. “But in all seriousness, what I was going to say is, while yes, she is very pretty, and while yes, I would definitely hit that.” He tightens his grip on my hand to make sure I don’t break free and hit him again. “She’s not really my type.”

“You have a type?” I quirk a brow. “Here I thought pussy was your type.”

“You really don’t think very highly of me, do you?” he asks, releasing my hand. I’m both relieved and disappointed.

He relaxes back against the couch, his shoulder resting against mine.

“Can you blame me?” I ask, letting my head lull to the side so I can look at him.

He turns his head at the same time and our eyes meet.

“I guess not.” He blows out a slow breath.

“Can I ask you something?” I wait until he nods before continuing, “Why have we never actually been friends? What is it about me that you hate so much?”

“I don’t hate you, Barlow. Not even close.”

“Then why?”

“I guess I could ask you the same question. Because if we’re being honest here, I think it’s you that’s always hated me, not the other way around.”

“That’s not true. Okay, sure, I was kind of a brat to you when you and Brennon first became friends, but that was only because I was jealous. I felt like you were trying to take my brother away. But once I realized that wasn’t going to happen, I tried to be your friend.”

“You did not.”

“I did so. I tried hanging out with you guys. I tried being nice to you. But you were always so cruel. Making fun of how I looked or the way I talked.”

“That’s because I thought you were cute.”

“Shut up.” I shake my head.

“I’m being serious. Haven’t you ever heard that when a boy is mean to a girl it’s because he secretly likes her?”

“Which makes zero sense.” I can’t help but remember something Zoe had said to a similar effect.

“Agreed. But doesn’t change the facts.”

“Whatever. So that’s your excuse. You thought I was cute when I was like ten so you decided to be mean to me forever.”

“Pretty much.” His smile widens and once again those perfect dimples make an appearance. “But in my defense, you never stopped being cute.”

Cute... Just what every girl wants to hear. Not beautiful or gorgeous.Cute. Hell, he might as well just call me ugly. I think that might be easier to swallow.

“Ha. Ha. Look at little Barlow. She’s so cute like a fucking puppy or a little kid,” I grind out in a mocking tone.

“Talking like that does make you a little less cute.” He scrunches his nose.

I instinctively take another swing at him but he catches my hand.
