CHAPTER THIRTEEN

BARLOW

––––––––

“Are you trying to killme?” Atlas leans in, whispering into my ear.

My gaze jumps to my brother and Rita who are walking a few paces ahead of us, and then back to Atlas.

“What?” I look at him like I have no idea what he’s talking about.

He bites down on his bottom lip and makes a show of letting his eyes rake over my body. I shiver, trying to play it off like it’s the cool evening temperature that has my skin peppered with goosebumps.

“You know what,” he mutters under his breath.

“You don’t like my outfit?” I mouth, not actually making a sound, as I gesture to the tiny little black number I’m wearing, complete with knee high boots, a long tail, and the cutest kitty ears headband. I also drew on some whiskers, curled my hair, and am wearing fake lashes for the first time ever.

Sexy kitten, yes, I know, cliché. But hey, I had like two hours to come up with something and the only Halloween store in town was completely picked over. I had a dress and boots that I knew I could make work with something, so I settled on the tail and ears. It was either that or a cape and vampire teeth and I’m not a fan of putting things in my mouth... Well, certain things anyway.

I knew about this party a couple of weeks ago when Rita mentioned it, but she never said anything beyond that and until Atlas mentioned it earlier today, I had no idea he or my brother were going. Maybe when we’re together we should spend a little more time talking and a little less time...

“Oh I like it, alright,” Atlas interrupts my thoughts. “That’s the problem.”

I keep my eyes trained on Brennon and Rita who have pulled ahead of us several feet, talking privately amongst themselves. Pretty certain I won’t be overheard, or seen, I reach over and gently trail my fingers across Atlas’s groin.

His eyes widen and his lips part ever so slightly.

“I don’t see that as a problem. Considering I wore it for you,” I purr, pulling my hand away.

“That’s it.” His tongue darts out, licking his lips. “You’re officially trying to kill me.”

“I can always stop...”

“Don’t you even fucking say it,” he warns, narrowing his gaze at me.

“So you don’t want me to stop?” I grin seductively.

There’s something so empowering about the knowledge that I can bring a man like Atlas Keaton to his knees. I never thought it was possible before. I thought I was invisible to him. Now I know differently. I can tell by the way he looks at me that I hold the cards. The question is, what do I want to do with them? Do I play my hand and cash out or do I go all in and risk everything for the chance to get what I really want... Him.

Before he has a chance to answer, Brennon turns, seeing that we’ve fallen quite a bit behind. “What the fuck are you two doing back there?” He stops, giving us the chance to catch up.

“Blame your sister,” Atlas grumbles like he’s annoyed.

“These boots are not the easiest things to walk in.” I shrug.

“Well then maybe you shouldn’t have worn them,” Brennon suggests, his steps resuming.

“I didn’t have anything else to go with this outfit.”

“If you ask me, you shouldn’t have worn that either,” he grumbles under his breath.

“Well, I happen to think she looks amazing,” Rita announces, throwing me a wink over her shoulder.

Talk about looking amazing. Rita went all out, dressing up like Storm fromX-Men, complete with a full leather body suit. And let me just tell you, she wears it well. I would never look that good in something like that.

“Thank you.” I smile at Rita before sticking my tongue out at the back of my brother’s head.

By the time we reach the frat house a couple minutes later, the party is already in full swing. Tons of people are standing outside, smoking, and talking, most in costume. I chuckle when I see one of the beefier looking guys dressed in a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader costume, complete with a blonde wig.
