“She’s good. Just had too much to drink,” Rita chimes in, trying to cover for me. I don’t have the words to tell her it’s no use. I can tell by the look on my brother’s face that he knows it’s a lie.

I mean, yes, I’m drunk. But he knows me well enough to know that’s not all there is to the story. And when the crunch of Atlas’s feet on top of the gravel announces his arrival, the way Brennon looks at him makes it pretty apparent what his assumptions are. Too bad there isn’t a chance in hell either of us are going to admit he’s right.

“Do you mind telling me what the fuck that was about?” Brennon turns, getting right up in Atlas’s space.

“You didn’t see what I did. If you did, you’d be thanking me.” He shoots me an angered filled glare over Brennon’s shoulder.

“Thanking you?” My brother snorts. “You just caused one hell of a fucking scene in a club that Rita put her neck out to get us into.”

“Not my fault your sister was practically fucking some rapist on the dance floor.”

“Oh my god. Because he was interested in me, he has to be a rapist. Is that it?” I can’t keep quiet, plus I think by this point we all know my mouth has a mind of its own.

“Don’t twist my fucking words!” Atlas fires back.

“Fuck you.” I flip him not one, but two middle fingers, making sure I get my point across.

“Would you two fucking stop!” Brennon explodes, turning in a way that allows him to look back and forth between us.

“You know what, gladly.” Atlas throws his arms up in the air, his gaze coming to me. “I’m done looking out for you.”

His words say one thing, but his expression says something else entirely. He would like my brother to believe that the bullshit he just pulled was because he was looking out for me because I’m Brennon’s sister, but we both know there’s so much more to it than that.

“Never fucking asked you to, did I?” I sneer.

“Fuck this. I’m out of here.” He spins and takes off through the parking lot, completely ignoring my brother who hollers after him.

“What the fuck?” Brennon looks back at me.

“Don’t ask me. I was just trying to have a good time andyourstupid best friend went all crazy on the guy I was dancing with.” I shrug like I have no idea what the hell just happened, even though my insides feel like they’ve been zapped with a taser. Electricity pings through my body, making me feel twitchy and not in complete control of my muscles.

“Where the fuck is he going?” he says to no one in particular as we watch Atlas jump into his Jeep, fire the engine to life, and speed out of the parking lot without a backward glance.

I want to run after him with everything that I have. Demand that he tell me why he’s here, why he punched the guy I was kissing. Why he cared so much when he made it so clear that he didn’t want me. But of course, I know I can’t do that.

“Good riddance,” I mutter, stumbling when I attempt to take a step back toward the building. I need another drink like something fierce.

“Whoa. Whoa. Where the fuck do you think you’re going?” Brennon catches me around the arm and hauls me backward.

“Going to get another drink.” I recognize the slur in my words for the first time and start to consider that maybe I’m a bit more intoxicated than I had originally thought.

“Like hell you are. Your ass is staying right here until we can get a car to come take us home.”

“He left you here,” I say as if just realizing that Atlas took off, stranding my brother here.

“No shit. What tipped you off?” He snorts, running a hand through his hair.

“Uber is on the way,” Rita announces, holding up her phone.

“Good. The sooner I can get this one home,” he hitches a thumb toward me, “the better.”

“Excuse me butthis onehas a name and she also happens to not want to go home.”

“Well I didn’t want to have to break up a lovers’ quarrel between you and my best friend, then get left here without a ride home, but hey.” He tosses his hands in the air. “We can’t always get what we want.”

“Lovers’ quarrel.” I laugh like it’s the most hilarious thing I’ve ever heard and then abruptly stop laughing. “Not in a million years.”

“You sure about that?” He arches a brow. “Because between you and me, you two are absolute shit liars.”
