Pressing up on my elbows, my gaze settles on the water that pushes and pulls as it crashes to the surface before being sucked back out into the ocean.

Silence pings around us like static electricity that I can physically feel in the air.

“You know, today is the first day I’ve ever swam in the ocean,” I tell him, needing something to fill the space that suddenly feels too heavy.

“Really?” I look his way and find his eyes locked on me.

“We never traveled. In fact, I had never been out of Pennsylvania, that I can remember,” I quickly add. “Until you brought me here.”

“Makes sense.”

“What does?”

“Why you never traveled.”

“How so?”

“The more invisible you are, the better.”

“And traveling makes me less invisible?” I question, not sure I follow.

“There are cartel operations all over the world. It makes sense that your father wouldn’t want to risk getting you too close to one. Especially given how many enemies he’s accumulated over the years. He picked a good location. The closest cartel activity I could track was hundreds of miles from where you grew up.”

“Activity?”

“Shipments. Sales. Suppliers.”

“Oh.” I pull in a breath. “Is it drugs?” I ask, mildly embarrassed that I don’t actually know.

“Mostly. Though some run guns as well.”

“How many men work under you?” I ask, my curiosity peaked.

“A few.”

“A few as in five or a few as in a few hundred.”

“A few as in thousands.” His dark eyes seem to lighten slightly at my surprised reaction, the amusement behind them apparent.

“Thousands?” I repeat. “How big is your operation?”

“Big.”

“How big?”

“Big,” he repeats, clearly not willing to give me a straight answer.

“Where is your headquarters?”

“My headquarters?” He snorts out a laugh.

“Yeah, you know, like where you do your main business from.”

“You know I can’t tell you that.” He gives me a knowing look.

“Why not?”

He leans in so close I can feel his warm breath on my cheek. “Because then I’d have to kill you.”
