“Are you okay?” His voice is gentle, a complete one-eighty to the way he spoke moments ago. His hand reaches out hesitantly to touch my arm.

I pull back so violently you would think his hand was a venomous snake preparing to sink its fangs into me.

“Don’t you fucking touch me,” I seethe, fresh tears filling my eyes.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t have a choice.”

“Didn’t have a choice?” I spit blood on the ground. “You said so yourself. You’re the one calling the shots.”

“It’s not that simple.” He takes a commanding step toward me and I step back.

“You fucking hit me!” My voice bounces off the concrete walls surrounding us.

I know it sounds crazy, but after the way he reacted when one of his guards put his hands on me, I truly believedhewould keep me safe. What a fucking stupid girl I am.

“Esteban has to believe you’re in danger.”

“I am in danger!” I scream even louder. “Because I’m here!” I’m starting to lose my composure.

“You’re safer here than anywhere else.”

“Bullshit. Those men would keep me safe.” I point at nothing in particular. “I’d be safe with my father,” I say, not actually knowing if that’s true.

“Your father is the worst of them all!” he yells in my face.

“No! You’re the worst of them all.” I point my shaky finger at him. “Because you pretend to be better than them. Only you’re not better. You’re a fucking monster!”

Before I can stop myself, I launch myself at him.

He moves so fast that I’ve barely registered my own movements before I’m spun around, his arms wrapped around me from behind, holding me in place.

“Don’t,” he warns in my ear, tightening his grip.

“Get off of me!” I try to fight against his hold but it does me no good. He’s too strong.

“Not until you calm the fuck down,” he grinds, his breath hot on the side of my neck. “I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You’ve already hurt me.” I lift my feet off the ground and try to buck forward but it’s like he has me in some unbreakable death grip.

“Let’s not forget who I am,Marianna.” The use of my birth name is like acid on his tongue. “You said so yourself, I’m a monster. I’ve been more than patient with you but keep pushing me and I’ll show you what I’m really capable of.”

“Show me then.” I fight harder. “Fucking kill me! Anything is better than this.”

His hold on me loosens just enough that he’s able to spin me around. My eyes meet his for one brief moment before he dips down and throws me over his shoulder.

I kick and scream the whole way to my room, yelling obscenities, beating his back with my fists as hard as I can, but it’s like nothing registers. Like he’s immune to pain.

Once inside, he kicks the door shut with his foot and lowers me to my feet. They no more than hit the ground before I swing again, this time my palm contacting his face on a loud smack.

Regret instantly seeps through me when I catch his murderous glare.

“I...I...” My words die on my lips when his hand closes around my wrist and he tugs me against his rock-hard chest. His breathing is erratic. His eyes wild. And for a brief moment I fear what he might do.

Without warning, his mouth crashes down on mine, his hands sliding around either side of my face, holding me in place.

Shock and disbelief pound through my brain, my mind screaming for me to push him away, my body doing exactly the opposite. Within seconds, I melt against him and my lips part.

His tongue dips inside my mouth, sweeping across mine, and I swear it feels like my body has suddenly been thrown into the fires of hell. My skin burns. My body pulses. The hum in my ears makes it impossible to hear anything other than the sound of my own heartbeat as it races wildly in my chest.
