“I, uh...” I blink rapidly as my vision starts to blur. “I don’t feel so good.” I abruptly stand, my legs nearly giving out under my own weight when I do.

Mateo catches me easily by the arms.

“I think I’m starting to understand why you don’t drink,” he teases, but there’s a hint of something else to his voice. Something that stirs an uneasiness in my gut.

“I think... I think I need to get some air.”

“Come on, I’ll help you.” He offers me his arm and without logical thought, I take it.

Making our way through the crowded bar, whatever is going on with me only seems to get worse with each step we take. By the time we make it outside, I’m not sure if I’m going to puke, pass out, or both. Both options seem very likely at this point.

“Something...something isn’t right.” I lean into his side when we reach the edge of the sidewalk. I look up at his face but I’m not able to get my eyes to focus. “I don’t feel good.”

His face dips down, hovering inches from mine.

“Just relax. It’ll be over soon.” His voice is hushed.

His words cause every nerve ending in my body to stand at attention.

“You...” I try to push away from him but he wraps an arm around my shoulders, keeping me in place. “What did you...” I can’t finish my sentence as my body slumps forward. If not for his grip on me, I would have face planted on the concrete.

His arms shift and suddenly my feet are no longer on the ground.

I have the vague sensation of moving, but before I can really process it everything fades to black.
