“Clearly it was a paid job.”

“Was it just them?”

Mateo nods. “Guess they thought since they had the element of surprise they could do it without backup. That was their biggest mistake. They paid for it with their lives.” A shudder runs through me. “I’m just relieved Niko didn’t bleed out on the boat.”

“But how didtheyknow where you would be?” When Dimitri saysthey, his eyes slide to me and I know exactly who he’s referring to. My father and his cartel.

“How is a question we’d both like the answer to. Someone’s been leaking information to Herrera. Now I know whoever it is must be someone inside this compound. No one else knew my flight schedule or that I was heading to Columbia on business.”

“Does that mean he knows where we are?”

“I don’t think so. The coordinates are only known by a select few, none of which I believe would flip for someone like EstebanfuckingHerrera. One of them just took three bullets for me, and he’s the only other person on this island besides me that knows exactly where we are. The airstrip, however, that’s another story entirely.”

“He obviously knew you’d be there and when.”

“Obviously,” Mateo grumbles. “I need you to talk to the men. Don’t let them know what happened. Just ask around, see what you can find out.”

Dimitri nods, spinning on his heel as he quickly exits the room.

“Someone tried to kill you?” I risk a glance up and meet Mateo’s gaze.

“Don’t worry, little bird. It’s not the first time it’s happened. Luckily, I’m a hard man to kill.”

“And you think it was my father?”

“I know it was.”

My stomach rolls again, but this time for a completely different reason.

My father tried to kill Mateo. He tried to kill the man holding me captive. I should be happy. I should be grateful that he’s fighting for me, but instead, I feel anger. Anger that the man sitting in front of me could be dead if not for Niko jumping in front of him.

I shouldn’t care. I should want him dead. But that’s not the case.

“Let me take a look at that arm,” I tell him, pushing to a stand.

“It’s fine.” He brushes me off.

“Please, Mateo. It’ll give me something to focus on.”

He seems to understand, nodding once.

“Okay.”

I grab the spool of thread, cutting off a long piece before grabbing a fresh needle and what little is left of the rubbing alcohol. Snagging a couple paper towels, I head back to the table, reclaiming my seat next to Mateo.

“Take your shirt off,” I tell him and he does as I instruct, unbuttoning it before sliding the blood-soaked shirt from his shoulders.

I focus on the wound, gently cleaning it.

It’s not as bad as I had originally thought, but it definitely still needs stitches. He was lucky... This time.

Threading the needle, I pinch his skin together. “This is going to hurt,” I warn him.

“I think I’ll manage.” He smirks.

Quickly I get to work sewing him up. It’s different than when I was stitching Niko. Mainly because Niko was unconscious and Mateo is watching every move I make. I can feel the heat from his gaze on the side of my face.

“Where did you learn to do this?”
