CHAPTER NINE

“WHAT THE...” I JUMPat the sight of Mateo sitting in the chair next to my bed as I exit the bathroom. “What are you doing in here?” I tighten the towel around me, trying to hide my body from his heated gaze.

I was about to jump in the shower when I realized I forgot to grab pants. People tend to come in and out of my room unannounced, so I prefer to dress in the bathroom. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize I didn’t grab any until I was already undressed.

“I didn’t want to leave things the way they were,” he explains, pushing up out of the chair as he slowly stalks toward me.

He’s still wearing the same blood-soaked shirt, open in the center, showing off his incredible chest.

“And how did we leave things?” I snap, my irritation holding strong. “Because I’m pretty sure I told you I was coming up here to shower.”

“Did you?” He cocks his head to the side, a smirk playing on his lips.

What the hell does he think he’s doing?

“With you mad at me.”

“Like you care if I’m mad at you.” I turn, yanking open the middle drawer of the dresser before pulling out the first pair of pajama bottoms I see.

“Actually, I do. Probably a hell of a lot more than I should.”

When I turn back around, he’s much closer. So close that I can feel the heat radiating off his body.

“Yeah, okay.” I sidestep around him and slip into the bathroom, attempting to close the door behind me. Except Mateo’s foot is wedged in the doorway. He easily pushes it open, pushing me right along with it. “What the hell, Mateo? I told you I need to shower.”

“Me too.” He shrugs his shirt off his shoulders and lets it fall to the floor.

“Have you lost your damn mind? I’mnotshowering with you!” I behave like the idea is absolutely repulsive, when in truth my pulse has already begun to race at the idea.

“No?” He quirks a brow, popping open the top button of his pants before slowly pulling the zipper down.

“No.” I grind my molars together.

“Suit yourself.” He tugs his pants and boxers down in one swift motion, kicking them to the side as he steps into the shower.

I avert my gaze, not willing to give him the satisfaction of me looking at him.

He clicks the dial and instantly the water turns on.

“Mateo.” I sigh.

When I turn my gaze toward him, I find him standing in the open doorway of the shower, his arms crossed in front of his broad chest.

Don’t look down. Don’t look down. It’s all I can think. And then...I look down. Jesus, there really is something wrong with me.

I force my eyes back up, not missing the satisfied look on his face.

“You need to leave.”

“And why would I do that?” He’s stalking toward me, the heat from the shower causing steam to fill the room.

“Because we are not doing this.”

“Doing what?” he asks innocently. “Taking a shower?”

“You know that if I get in there with you we won’t just be taking a shower.”

“And that’s a problem?”
