“Yeah. Norma changed the bandages a little while ago, but for the most part they’re looking pretty good.”

“So I guess it’s safe to say I don’t completely suck at sewing up bullet wounds.”

“Not too bad at all.” A small but weak smile tugs at the corners of his mouth. “Careful, you keep proving your worth and Mateo might not ever let you go.”

I hope he doesn’t...

“With the way things are going, I’m not sure that’s going to happen anyway.” I sink further into the chair. “I can’t believe you guys were ambushed.”

“It’s actually not that uncommon.”

“I know, but Mateo was saying he thinks there might be a mole. Someone feeding information to my father.”

“He told you that?” He seems surprised.

“Yeah. He also told me that you jumped in front of him to shield him when the first shots were fired. You saved his life.”

“I made a vow to protect his life with mine.”

“Even still, that was very brave.”

“Bravery is my middle name.” He coughs, cringing as he grips his stomach. “Besides, he saved my life too. He practically carried me off that plane, then kept me awake for almost the entire three-hour ride back here.”

“You were on that boat for three hours?” I gape at him. “It’s a wonder you weren’t dead within the first hour with the way you were losing blood.”

“Nah. It takes more than a few bullet holes to kill me.”

“What is it with you men thinking that you can outrun death?”

“Maybe because we’ve done it plenty of times before.”

“It’ll catch up to you one day.”

“Everything does eventually. So, what else did Mateo tell you?”

“Why?” I ask curiously.

“Just curious. He seems to have a loose tongue where you’re concerned. I wonder why that is.” He gives me a knowing look.

“He doesn’t tell me anything.”

“It would seem as though he does.”

“He did tell me that you’re the reason I’m alive right now. Had you not taken those bullets and he had died, his men would have killed me in retaliation.”

“And probably sent your head to your father in a box.”

I swallow hard, the thought of that actually happening too gruesome to picture.

“Right. Well, um... I guess it’s a good thing he came back alive then, huh?” I pick at a loose thread on the hem of my shirt. “So, thanks for that.”

“I saved your life and then you saved mine. Looks like we’re both indebted to each other.”

“It would seem so.”

“Seriously though, Mila.” I glance up, pretty certain this is the first time he’s actually said my name. “Thank you for what you did. You very easily could’ve let me bleed out.”

“I never could’ve done that, no matter how much I wish I could some days.”
