I’m the one who’s been locked away for over a month.

I’m the one whose father he plans to kill.

This involves me.

So why is he excluding me?

“You’re upset.”

“You’re observant,” I mutter under my breath just loud enough that he can hear me.

“I’m trying to do what’s best for you, Mila.”

“So you keep saying.” My gaze cuts to him. “Yet it doesn’t feel that way at all. You’re sending me away. Why? So it’s easier to cut ties and run once you’ve accomplished what you set out to do? Your need for me is coming to an end, is that it?”

“No.” He shakes his head. “It’s nothing like that.”

“Then tell me what the hell is going on.” I can see the dilemma in his eyes. “What’s happened?”

He blows out another hard breath.

“We got word that your father is on the move. Based on what little information my informants could gather, it would seem as though he’s found our location.”

“But that’s what we wanted, isn’t it?”

“It is.”

“Then what’s the hiccup?”

“He’s traveling with more men than I had anticipated. I’ve had to call in reinforcements. I need you gone before they arrive.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s the only way I can ensure your safety.”

“The safest place for me is right here, with you.”

“No, it’s not. In fact, it’s probably the most dangerous now. This isn’t going to be some verbal dispute. It’s going to be a blood bath with many lives lost on both sides. If they overtake us, your location will be the only leverage I have.”

“So then it’s not about keeping me safe. It’s about making sure you don’t lose the upper hand.”

“It is about keeping you safe. But right now, those two things go hand in hand.”

“Of course they do,” I grumble. “You know, for a moment I actually started to believe you cared about me. That whatever this is going on between us had become more important than your need for revenge. But I was wrong. You don’t care about me at all. I was just something to pass the time with. A plaything. My role here hasn’t changed. I’m still nothing more than a pawn in this fucked up game of chess you and my father are playing.”

“You know that isn’t true.”

“Do I?”

“Goddamn it, Mila. Will you stop?” he growls.

“Why? Hitting a little too close to the truth for your liking?” I fire back.

“Why can’t you see that I’m doing this for you?”

“Maybe because I find it hard to believe that anything you do is for me.”

He shifts, leaning forward so that his face is inches from mine.
