What if they get inside?

What if they find us?

I have little doubt that they’ll kill Dimitri and Norma on sight. And while I shouldn’t care, I do. These are two people I’ve come to care for. I don’t want them, or anyone else, dying because of me.

But then I have to remind myself, this isn’t just about me. I didn’t start this. Mateo did. And now he has to be the one to finish it... For all our sakes.

The fighting seems to go on for hours. Every few minutes a random voice will come across Dimitri’s line, shouting about positions, and calling out if they’re pinned down.

I watch Dimitri grow more anxious with each passing minute. It’s killing him to be stuck down here with us rather than fighting alongside Mateo and the rest of his men. It’s written all over his face. But I also know he takes Mateo’s orders very seriously and there isn’t a chance in hell he’s going to leave us down here defenseless.

We all freeze at the sound of footsteps overhead. Dimitri holds his finger to his lips, silently telling us to be quiet. Muffled voices follow next. The sound of doors opening and slamming.

Dimitri pulls the gun from his right holster, but I catch sight of a second one tucked in the back of his jeans when he turns and presses his ear to the door.

“Dimitri,” I hiss under my breath, pulling his gaze back to me. “Give me your other gun.”

He shakes his head. “Not a chance.”

“I’m serious. If they storm in here, it’s you two that are in danger, not me. Give me your other gun so I can help keep you alive.”

More footsteps. More voices. Then it happens again.Bap. Bap. Bap. These gunshots sound so close, likely in the room above us. Seconds later there’s a loud thud and the ceiling vibrates. I can tell by Dimitri’s expression that he knows it was a body hitting the floor. We just don’t know whose body.

“Give me the gun,” I hiss again, holding my hand out.

He hesitates, uncertainty clear in his eyes.

“Give her the damn gun, Dimitri,” Norma weighs in, clearly falling on my side of things.

“Mateo will fucking kill me.”

“It won’t matter if you’re already dead.” I wiggle my fingers, my hand stretched out, palm up, waiting.

“Fuck,” he grumbles, pulling the weapon out of the back of his jeans before extending it to me. “Do you even know how to shoot?” His voice is barely above a whisper.

I take the gun from him, sliding the safety off before wrapping my hand around it, my finger hovering near the trigger.

“My mom taught me.”

His eyebrow shoots up in question.

“Well, my mom took me to a shooting range a few times and the man that worked there taught me.” I gauge his reaction. “What? She wanted me to know how to defend myself. Looks like maybe she knew one day it would come in handy.”

Dimitri nods once and turns his attention back to the door.

We stand there in silence, guns drawn, my heart beating so hard in my chest it might as well be a church bell leading the men right to us. My whole body vibrates with each thud and thump.

The house is eerily quiet now. Almost too quiet.

We all jump when Dimitri’s walkie talkie chirps. The voice that I hear nearly causes me to slump to the floor in relief.

Mateo...

He’s alive.

I can’t make out what he’s saying. The connection is weak and his voice drops out every few seconds, but it’s clear he’s talking to someone, though it doesn’t appear to be Dimitri.

Then I hear it...
