But I don’t get that far.

I only get a few dozen feet away from the place I blew my load all over the ground when something unusual catches my eye.

There, spread out along the ground and running perpendicular to the path I’m walking, are footprints.

Big ones.

I freeze and look around for a third time. I’m certain I’m alone—there hasn’t been even a whisper of life since I came out here—but something has definitely been through here recently. Judging by the size of the feet, my guess is a Malev.

Cautiously, I make my way over and bend to examine the footprints, and the distinctly rotting smell of a Malev hits me.

Definitely one of them.

And the fact that I can still smell him means it wasn’t too long ago that he came through here.

They’re maybe a couple of hours old?

This isn’t good.

There’s a chance it’s nothing more than a lost beast trying to find his way back out of the woods, but it seems unlikely. In all my years of working for Rafe, I’ve never seen a Malev step foot into these woods, much less wander its way this deep into the trees.

It’s strange, and a twisted feeling in the pit of my stomach tells me that something is wrong.

I don’t like it.

With nothing but time—and possibly a Malev—to kill, I decide to follow the footprints.

ChapterEight

Devyn

Did I imagine going back to Azarius’s bedroom with him after he all but dragged my naked ass out of the dining room? Definitely.

Did I also foresee him leaving me alone for several hours while he disappeared to collect his thoughts? Absolutely not.

But I probably should have seen it coming. After all, he already made me wait for two hours outside a club in Atlanta. Testing my patience is obviously one of his new favorite pastimes.

Why should now be any different?

With absolutely nothing to entertain me but a torrent of thoughts—a jumble of blurred confusion that only gets more complicated the longer I think about it—I wind up lying in the middle of the bed, fully dressed in my baggy clothes, blanket pulled up to my chin as I stare at the black ceiling.

How in the world did my life get this fucked up?

I mean, I know how.

I just can’t believe it.

One minute I’m working in Atlanta trying to scrape together some money to pay my half of the rent, and the next I’m in the middle of a monster world fighting for my life. This is like some fucked-up Netflix original series, and I’m just watching it play out, wondering if my character lives to the next episode.

My character better make it through to the finale, or I’m going to be pissed.

I deserve it after deep throating Azarius in front of two other monsters.

A groan passes my lips, and I squeeze my eyes shut. I’m not much, if any, closer to making it home, but at least I’ve avoided a death sentence for now. Rafe doesn’t seem to like me—I’m not entirely sure he likes anyone with a heartbeat—but he’s letting me live.

For now.

All I have to do is not screw anything up.
