Page 5 of A Monstrous Claim

It isn’t too far-fetched. Two single, attractive men traveling alone together and bickering like an old married couple. I wouldn’t be surprised if they said yes at this point.

Elio chuckles, making my insides melt. After being so brash, his laugh is music to my ears. Maybe he’s not as callous as he comes across.

“If I were attracted to men, my taste would be much better than this dumbass,” he jokes and laughs again.

Azarius scoffs. “As if I’d date your ugly ass.”

Laughter bellows through the car.

“Give him some credit, Az,” I say. “He isn’tthatbad.”

Elio’s gaze grips mine in the reflection, and a smug look flashes over his face. “Do you find me attractive?”

Heat creeps its way into my cheeks, and I look away quickly. I don’t know why I’m embarrassed, considering I did this to myself, but Elio’s response has me blushing. I guess I hadn’t expected him to be so straightforward.

Damn him.

I do find him insanely attractive. Especially his accent, which I’ve yet to place. But I’m not going to give in that easily. He’ll have to fight a little if he wants that answer.

“I didn’t say that.” I roll my eyes. “I said he could do worse.”

Azarius howls with laughter, but Elio is hardly amused. “Yeah, well, she didn’t say anything about you not being a dumbass, so I guess that still stands.”

“Whatever,” Azarius groans. “What about you, Devyn? Are you seeing anyone?”

“No, I’m not.”

I’m too embarrassed to admit justhowsingle I am—even Cara is trying to set me up with guys she goes to school with—but my instant reply probably gave it away. Since moving to Atlanta, I haven’t gone out to any bars or clubs, and I haven’t downloaded any dating apps trying to catch a man. Putting my battered heart back out there isn’t in my plans anytime soon—hell, potentially forever—so I haven’t bothered to try.

But I doubt anything with Azarius or Elio would be serious.

A night of unbridled passion at most.

Maybe two if the dick is good.

ThatI can do. No strings attached, no feelings. It’s a safe bet. One that I’m willing to make. All that’s left is for either—or both—of them to take the bait.

“Haven’t really found anyone worth my time,” I explain with a fake sigh of exasperation, letting my shoulders sag for effect.

“In a big city like this?” Azarius asks, leaning forward in his seat. My eyes are trained ahead, but I can sense his closeness and smell the spiciness of his cologne. “Surely there’s someone who’s caught your eye.”

“There might have been one or two.” I purse my lips to fight a grin. “But men nowadays don’t seem to want to take a lady out.”

“Ah, I see,” he says, his deep voice spurring flutters to life in my stomach. “Well, maybe if we’re ever back in town, we can change that.”

My excitement, which had been steadily growing over the last few minutes, suddenly deflates as the reality of his words hit me.

“Back in town?” I ask. “Are you leaving?”

“Tonight, I’m afraid.” He retracts in his seat and returns to staring out the window. “Right after we close on this business deal.”

Son of a bitch. I bite back my disappointment and fight to remain unfazed. It shouldn’t bother me. After all, I just met these men, and they could be serial killers for all I know. But the gravitational pull I feel toward them is unusual and unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. They’ve completely bewitched me.

Devyn, you’ve completely lost your fucking marbles.

“Well, if you’re ever in town and need a ride, I’m your girl,” I say, mustering my enthusiasm. It’s a last-ditch effort to swap numbers with them while I can, and if that doesn’t work, then I’m never making the first move again.

Club 47 is a sleek, charcoal gray building with blacked-out windows. A bouncer the size of a refrigerator stands outside the glossy black door in a suit, despite it being early evening. It’s way too early for club goers to be ready to party. Most of them are probably still at work, considering it’s four o’clock. Not to mention it’s Sunday. I have the sneaking suspicion that Azarius and Elio lied about being in real estate—this doesn’t feel like the kind of place where people meet to discuss houses.
