“Yes.”

He doesn’t budge from the doorway but stands there watching me.

“Come closer,” I urge, waving him over with a hand covered in bubbles.

He stares at me for a beat longer before slipping into the room and letting the door fall closed behind him. With slow steps, he crosses to the side of the tub and looks down at me.

“What do you need?” he asks, his expression unreadable. Is he mad? Annoyed? Hopefully neither, but I can’t tell.

“I wanted to thank you,” I say, my stomach turning nervously. “You did so much for me today—so much that you didn’t have to do—and it truly means the world to me. So thank you.”

The corner of his mouth lifts, but I can tell it’s forced. My heart drops a little, worried he’s already reverted back to the asshole who is content to ignore me.

This isn’t how I imagined things would be when we got back, now that we know the truth. Shouldn’t he be happy like the rest of us?

I decide to switch tactics.

“You know,” I start, summoning every out of gall I possess. “You’ve had me all over you today, and you probably smell like ass too. Why don’t you join me?”

At least if he declines, I tried.

His jaw clenches and his eyes fall to the bubbles hiding me from view.

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.” I’m more than sure.

Our relationship has been rife with tension since the beginning, and I’m curious to know if it was all sexual frustration or something else. He went from hating me, to telling me I could have both him and Azarius, to being cold and distant again.

I want to know the truth, and the only way to do that is by us getting closer.

And how much closer can you get than a bubble bath?

Not very.

He holds my gaze as he undoes his pants and nudges them down passed his thighs and to the floor.

I scoot up, giving him room to slide in behind me, and my heart rate spikes as he steps into the water. It's a snug fit with the two of us, but the feel of my back pressed firmly against him is worth it.

"Is this what you wanted?" he asks as he circles his arms around me beneath the water.

"Yes." I lean my head back against his chest. "That's much better."

I breathe in time with the rise and fall off his chest and tease his thigh with my fingertips under the water.

I don’t know what I expected, but nothing happens. We sit in the still silence for several minutes, and I’m beginning to think I’ve mistaken his kindness as flirting when he didn’t intend it that way.

He’s so confusing. I wish I could just read his mind. Things would be so much easier.

"Is this not what you want?" I ask, prying for an answer.

He exhales a deep breath. "This is exactly what I want."

There’s a hint of hesitation in his voice. Something is wrong.

"But?"

When he doesn't answer immediately, I turn my head as far as I can to see his face. To my surprise he's just staring at me.
