“What are we going to do?” I ask.

“There’s nothing we can do right now.” Azarius shrugs. “They aren’t quite close enough to assume an attack, and we’re severely outnumbered.”

“I’m going to update Rafe on the situation,” Elio says, squeezing me against him. “He’ll probably have us check again in a few hours just to be safe.”

I breathe a sigh of relief, but the uncomfortable feeling in my gut doesn’t completely go away.

Something still feels off.

And I’m pretty sure it has to do with the Malevs.

ChapterEighteen

Rafe

Only after sending Elio and Azarius out two more times, the last of which the Malevs were nowhere to be found, am I finally able to comfortably retreat to my bed.

The fact that so many of them were traveling together is alarming, but not entirely unexpected. After all, it’s no secret that the power players of the monster realm are allying themselves against the miscreants. It would only make sense for them to do the same.

My dreams are a muddied blend of negotiations, slaughtering Malevs, forming new alliances, and the annoyingly vulnerable human girl. I’m hardly surprised.

Devyn.

Just the sound of her name is enough to light a fire of rage within me. She’s completely useless, but for some reason, I’m intrigued by her.

And that infuriates me more than the sound of her name.

Why would I have any interest in something useless?

Despite being descended from warlocks, she’s just a human in my eyes. Unable to fight or protect herself. Unable to use magic or transform. She’s a liability, one that somehow made Azarius and Elio fall in love with her, and she could be the reason they get killed.

Perhaps she does possess magic after all.

As I’m dreaming about standing with her in the foyer, my hands on her shoulders as I slowly pull her against me in a romantic gesture, a series of loud bangs at my door rips me out of the image and drops me in my bed.

“Who is it?” I roar out, almost hoping it’s Devyn so I can take out every ounce of my fury on her.

“Elio, sir. Get up now! We’re under attack!”

“What the fuck?” The words barely have time to leave my mouth before my feet are on the floor and I’m rushing toward the door.

I rip it open and find Elio blocking my way. His eyes are wide, brows knitting together in worry.

“Explain,” I demand, shoving past him into the hallway. I’m only wearing a pair of silk sleep pants that were given to me as a gift, but there’s no time to change. We hit the stairs and take them two at a time to the second floor.

“Malevs. We think they’re the group we saw, but it doesn’t make sense,” Elio rambles. “There was no sign of them earlier.”

“It’s possible they saw one of you tracking them and hid until nightfall. Where is Azarius?”

Glass shatters somewhere below us, and I curse under my breath. These Malevs are going to obliterate the mansion. The fuckers. I’ll make sure they pay for every scratch.

“The foyer holding them off.”

“And the girl?”

I scold myself for asking. I shouldn’t care if she lives or dies. Or gets taken. Whatever the Malevs have on their mind currently. But for some fucking reason, a possessive urge ignites in my chest, and I feel obligated to ensure her safety.

“Azarius hid her in one of the rooms, but I don’t know how much it will help. They can smell her a mile away.”
