“Layla, can I speak to you for a moment?” Dan asked, not taking his eyes off Gabbriello.

“Sure,” she said, as she turned to Gabbriello. “Excuse me for a moment.”

Gabbriello nodded as he watched them walk away.

Not wanting to cause a scene, Layla stepped aside with her boss. As soon as they were a few feet away, Dan spoke in a hushed tone. “What the hell are you thinking? You’re hanging out with a criminal that we’ve been trying to apprehend for months.”

“Your point?”

“My point is that you need to be careful. I can charge you with accessory.”

“For what?”

“Witnesses say a man and a woman were involved in a shooting at a small restaurant in Glenside a few days ago. Was that you?”

“Yes, and if you’d did your job, you would have known that those men shot at us first. We were only trying to defend ourselves.”

“This will not end well for you if you don’t walk away. You need to stop interfering with this investigation.”

“What are you doing to find Sam’s killer?”

“I have agents working with the police on it.”

“Bullshit.” Layla said through her teeth.

“Hey!” Dan snapped. “You better watch it or else I will have you written up again for misconduct.”

Layla remembered the past week of her life as being the best and worst week ever. She lost her cousin and best friend, but she gained a partner and someone who actually understood her. Apart from everything she has worked for in the FBI, Layla felt like this week had made more of a difference than the past ten years of her life. Not once has she thought about her job or the boring nine-to-five work weeks. Samantha went after what she wanted. No matter what people thought of her, she did what she wanted and never looked back.

“Fine,” Layla spat. “But don’t waste the paperwork because I quit. And you can now refer to me as Mrs. Deluca.”

She was about to walk away when Dan grabbed her arm. “Don’t do this, Layla. Don’t trust him, he won’t be there for you. Even if you think he is now, he won’t be, and you will be left with absolutely nothing.”

“Go fuck yourself.” Layla pulled her arm away and walked back towards Gabbriello.

“What did he say?” G asked.

“He said that I shouldn’t trust you and that you won’t be there for me. He said, I might think you’re here for me now, but you won’t be.”

“Do you believe him?” Gabbriello asked.

Layla shook her head. “Hell no. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Oh, and by the way, I quit. So, you don’t have to worry about me turning you in.”

“Fuck!” Gabbriello gave her a surprised look.

“No, this is a good thing.”

Gabbriello turned to her with a serious expression. “No, I . . . I believe you.”

“Then, what is it?”

“I know who killed Samantha.”

CHAPTER 19

It was nine o’clock that evening when Gabbriello and Layla walked into the back office of the Emerald Club with Mr. E. and Rinaldo.

Jeffrey, Mariano, and Nicholas all looked up when they entered. They were all sitting around the table having a drink.
