As I grappled with the clash of concern and anger inside me, Wylder’s gaze slid to Kaige. “Anyway, having her around might distract attention fromyouwhile Anthea’s still working her investigation.”

Kaige’s shoulders stiffened, but he couldn’t argue with that.

Wylder motioned toward the staircase. “Get to bed, all of you. I want you sharp in the morning when we get to work on this new development.”

I didn’t like the sound of that at all, but I dipped my head in agreement and set off for my bedroom.

As soon as the door was closed behind me, the frustration that’d been building inside me overflowed. I slammed my fist against the doorframe. “Goddamn it.”

I walked to the bed and ripped the mattress off it, throwing it against the wall. It wasn’t enough. I pummeled it a few times, but the motions only made me feel more ineffectual. In the end, I sank to the floor, my hands still fisted.

For years, I hadn’t let myself think of her. And now Mercy Katz had shown up at my door, stirring up all kinds of trouble.
