Paige pressed her lips into a grim line. To everyone’s surprise, she shrugged. “No one knows.”

This time, my jaw hit the floor.

From the way Addie recoiled, she was taken aback. “What do you mean you don’t know?”

“No one has seen her. We think she’s in the underworld still, but her domain is a dark labyrinth. You’ve both seen it. There’s so much ground to cover; we can’t do it on our own.” Paige had a light in her eyes that spoke volumes.

“You want us to come down and help,” I supplied.

She sighed with relief. “I would really appreciate it. Maybe having Hel’s descendant in the underworld will help set it right again.”

Addie cocked her head and blinked. “Set it right again? What else is wrong?”

“Well…some rooms are disappearing. The underworld is endless, but there are many rooms that we’ve seen plenty of times. They shouldn’t just disappear. If you can shed some light down there, then maybe we’ll find Hel in one of those rooms.” Paige looked between us.

Bianca wasn’t here, but we didn’t need a witch to kill me this time. As Addie had reminded me, I could open a portal and step into the underworld all on my own. I could ferry us down into Hel’s domain, but I didn’t want to. A part of me wanted to let the old hag suffer wherever she was stuck.

She made Addie’s life a nightmare. She put too much responsibility on my wife’s shoulders. The goddess could take care of her own problems this time.

But Addie turned to me with a question on her lips. I sighed, knowing where this was going to go.

“Get dressed. We’re not going into the underworld naked.”
