Fenrir vanished through his own portal. I kept one hand on Maddox and twisted to find Paige, but she was already gone, too.

“She betrayed us,” he said.

My attention slid to Hel, but Maddox shook his head.

“Not Hel. Paige helped set Fenrir free.”

My jaw dropped. Maddox’s hand slid down my arm so that he could intertwine his fingers with mine. Though he tried to give a reassuring squeeze, I couldn’t find it in myself to be reassured.

We’d failed, over and over. Every time we had Fenrir right where we wanted him, he slipped away unharmed. I’d bound him with two chains, but he might be able to escape them with Paige’s help. Everything we’d done would be for nothing.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to kick my feet and stomp the ground.

Instead, I swallowed my frustration down and tried to center myself. It wasn’t working. I couldn’t help the cold rage building inside me. The pressure of it would make me blow sooner or later.
