Like we’d said, nothing would tear us apart.

I twisted and landed on my feet before lifting my gaze to meet Fenrir’s. He was distracted. A part of his consciousness was focused on Addie, who was fighting him in her own way.

It gave me an opening, and I took it. I leapt at the man. His reactions were slow. He twisted to catch me, but I altered my blow just enough to avoid his slow defense. My fist connected with his jaw, sending his head snapping to the side. This wasn’t about containing him anymore.

Rage and hatred simmered in my veins. It poured power into my punches. Inside me, my beast howled for our wife. I let loose a flurry of blows onto Fenrir. It sent him staggering backwards. If I could keep this up, then there was a chance I could wear him down.

My fury wasn’t enough to sustain me, though. The growl deep in my stomach crawled its way out of me. I could feel sharp claws piercing my insides. I tried to ignore the pinching hunger twisting me inside out, but it was a monster that was trying to take over from within. My beast shoved it back little by little.

My blows were weakening. Fenrir wasn’t staggered anymore. He managed to pull his arms up over his face. My hunger urged me forward. When I felt the sucking sensation of Fenrir’s consuming ability, I countered with my own.

I wasn’t careful about it, though. I flung a wide net out in an attempt to counteract Fenrir’s ability, but my hunger took control of it. I snarled, ravenous as my power dug into the earth around me like a beast with unforgiving fangs.

Fenrir blinked in surprise when I devoured a chunk of the ground beneath us. We dropped and landed in a small pit of my own making. When the corner of Fenrir’s mouth lifted, I knew that we were in trouble.

My ability turned matter into energy that I could consume, but it wasn’t enough. My body wantedmore. Nothing was enough. My stomach still clenched tight. The monster deep within my core threatened to crawl its way out so it could take what it wanted. The creature was tired of waiting for me to give it sustenance.

My hands shook. When I tried to steady my stance, my knees trembled. I locked them, full well knowing that I would only have a limited amount of time once I did so. I would have to unlock them or risk falling.

Beyond Fenrir, I caught the bright blue glow of arcana in Addie’s eyes. Her lips were still pressed into a determined line as she glared at the back of Fenrir’s head. I could hold off my monster long enough to buy her the time she needed.

I had no other choice. If Addie needed it, I would do it.

My checking on Addie gave Fenrir the opening that he needed. He sped past my defenses and caught me by my face. He swept me off my feet. My neck cried out in pain as he held me aloft, my toes hanging far above the ground.

When had he grown? It didn’t matter. I kicked him in the chest and wrenched my face from his grasp. Fenrir had turned on his consumption ability, though. My face burned where he ripped the skin away. Hot blood trickled down my cheek and gathered at my jaw.

Addie’s eyes went wide. The blue light of her arcana sputtered and nearly went out. I jerked my face away and wiped the back of my hand along my jaw. By the time I was done, my skin had healed. That took a lot out of me, though. I barely had the energy to fight, let alone heal.

We needed to stop Fenrir soon.

But we couldn’t do it alone.

We had people on our side. Wasn’t that what Addie had taught me? I was part of a pack. She had a group of friends who were like sisters to her. Where were they when we needed them? Why hadn’t we called on them?

Fenrir’s foot collided with the side of my head. The impact rattled my thoughts, but I managed to dig my feet and fingers into the ground to stay upright. Annoyed, I turned a glare up to Fenrir.

He laughed at my determination. I didn’t have time to point out how he was over-confident. I took the opening and slammed into his chest. We both went tumbling to the ground.

We hadn’t called on the others because they’d already fought fate and won. I knew it would be unfair to bring them into this fight and risk everything they’d earned. This was our battle. We would be the ones to come out on top so that everyone else could live out their happy lives.

I would be damned if Fenrir took my happy ending from me, too. The bastard wasn’t going to get away with this.

But, out of the corner of my eye I noticed something—or the lack thereof.

Addie was gone.
