We had help—powerful help—on our side. It felt good to have backup that I could trust again.

“I did what I had to do,” Hel said. “The world I pulled from the tree was already dying in my hands. The least I could do was give its power to you and those before you. If it helps, I refused to feed him after that.”

“That’s why he turned on you.” Addie leaned forward. “You wouldn’t take power, and you wouldn’t feed him.”

Hel nodded. “You helped me in that time. It has been an honor to watch you grow into the person I met back then. The Adeline that I met here was not the one from my memory. It would be a lie to say that I wasn’t worried.”

My wife stood, stiff and unmoving. She held her family rosary in her open hand and stared at it. She was lost in her own thoughts. Nothing anyone said would bring her out until she was ready. So, I stood over her and kept the goddess from making any more sudden moves.

The smell of cherry blossoms and strawberries filled the room and announced Persephone’s presence. I caught sight of the second goddess lounging in the bathtub behind us. Potato mewed and hopped into Persephone’s lap. The goddess remained quiet, but her presence said enough.

She’d come to back Addie up. Tension thickened the air in the room. Hel didn’t look at anyone, but I could tell that she’d sensed it, too. She didn’t have to openly acknowledge the angry glares pointed in her direction. The stiffness in her movement was enough to tell me that she was getting annoyed.

This could become a fight if we weren’t careful.
