He chuckled. “Because she’s mysister. Why would you think mykid?”

“The people who just left, you went to high school with her and she has a kid that’s graduating with Myanna!” I explained. “So I just…”

“AssumedIwas making babies in high school too?” he filled in and…

Shit.

Yeah, I guess I had.

“Well, it’s not like you tell me things. I didn’t even know you had a sister, Ky.”

“Cause you don’t be wanting to get close to me,” he said, sauntering up to where I was standing. “You just wanna use me for dick and dip out after.”

“I’ve stayed over plenty of times.” I sucked in a breath as he put a hand to the small of my back, but forced myself to keep my eyes open and on his face. “We’ve talked.”

“We have,” he admitted. “But I’ve matched your energy. I know your goals, your dreams, and you know mine. I don’t know anything about your people though.”

“Hell, neither do I,” I replied, before I could catch myself. I shrugged over the wide-eyed look he gave me. “Adopted, by two only children. My parents are great, but other than them, I don’t have… people. Not by blood.”

“Blood isn’t everything,” he said, smirking. “At least when you make it big, you won’t have ‘cousins’ you never met before running up with their hands out.”

I nodded. “True. But I also never had anybody to fight with me on the playground growing up.”

“That’s tough. Where did you grow up?”

I laughed. “The hood.”

“On the west coast?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh shit, that’s thehoodhood.” He chuckled and my eyes went wide.

“Excuse me?! Don’t get judgmental just cause y’all cleaned it up around here,” I warned, trying to sound like I was bothered even though I couldn’t keep the smile off my face.

“Ain’t nobody judging, Brookie. I’m just saying. You survived out there, you certified.”

“Myparentswere certified,” I corrected. “They had a bit of a Bonnie and Clyde-esque reputation before they decided to settle down and adopt me. I think most people just didn’t want to risk them getting active.” I laughed. “And besides that… I’m pretty sure I was just not noticeable enough to be anybody’s target otherwise.”

“That feels like a lie.”

“Which part?”

“The part where you flew under the radar,” he said. “This pretty ass brown skin, those lips? I know whatIwould’ve been saying to you as a rowdy ass youth.”

“What would you be saying?” I asked. “Something about me being your favorite dessert?”

A grin spread over his lips. “You mad about that?”

“Ishouldbe,” I told him. “I don’t know if Dean picked up on it, but Nickdefinitelydid.”

“Nick is cool.”

“That’s not the point and you know it,” I countered, sighing as he backed me toward the wall.

“Fine. You wanna stop doing this?”

He emphasizedthiswith a hand under my dress, between my thighs.
