Hyped me the fuck up.

Exactly the energy I needed.

I went from having a lowkey good time, just glad to be back in the mix, to having a fuckingblast.

Ididhave that other drink and I didn’t regret it.

Because I knew Onyx and the others wouldn’t let anything happen to me.

Kev had invaded this place so much seeking attention that I’d nearly forgotten before he ever came along, this wasmysafe space. For the most part, the only people in here now werePredatorsandBottomsregulars, and a few brave tourists who’d been warned about the potential for more than the usual trouble popping off.

Everybody here was vetted and approved.

So I hadanotherdrink.

And I got really damn goofy behind it, then promptly danced it all out of my system. It wasn’t until I was exhausted and ready to go that I remembered I’d shown up here with Keira, who’d been ghost since she… went to find Ghost.

When I went looking, her office light was on, but the door was closed, so I assumed they were talking business, which I didn’t want to interrupt. And if theyweren’ttalking business… I didn’t want to interruptthateither.

“Hey… I need a ride home,” I told Onyx after I’d hunted him down again, at the bar talking to Teo. “If that’s okay with you.”

“It’s definitely good with me,” he said, leaning in to speak to me. “But you should know, I rode here on my bike. So if you want a ride from me, you have to put your arms around me and getrealclose.”

I bit down on my lip, holding his gaze. “Wouldn’t be the first time, but uh… how aboutIdrive andyouride on the back?”

He smirked. “We can do that too, sweetheart. I got no problem being the big spoon.”

I laughed. “You are such a damn fool.”

I grabbed a spare helmet from my office before I followed him out to his bike, and minutes later, we were whipping through the desert, heading back to the city. I couldn’t front like it didn’t feel good being this close, with my arms tight around him to keep myself secure on the bike.

It was…cozy.

Even with our security escort.

I tuned them out, pretending they weren’t even there so I could just mentally settle into the moment. That cozy feeling didn’t subside even after he’d parked and walked me to my front door. I’d had a full, busy ass day today, leading into a good ass night.

One I wasn’t quite ready to be over.

“Thank you,” I told him, pushing my key into the door instead of using the keypad, just because it took a few seconds longer and I was trying to prolong saying goodbye.

“For what?” he asked, frowning like he was confused.

“For contributing to… a normal-feeling night. Agreatnight. And of course, for your help with the house stuff earlier. I know you had better shit to do than paint.”

He shook his head. “I didn’t.”

“That’snotwhat Brandon said.” I laughed, smiling up at him. “Hesaid he was going to have to lock me up somewhere because I was ruining a perfectly good lieutenant.”

His eyebrows went up. “Oh,lieutenant? I’m moving up in the world from a corner boy recruit, huh?”

“You wouldneverbe a corner boy,” I reminded him.

“Tell me anything, Tati.”

I stayed quiet for a moment, just looking at him. And then I pushed the door open behind me and stepped inside, without turning around. “I want you to come in.”

There was nothing but the loud ass crickets for what felt like a long time.
