“What do you think it is?” I asked him.

Ozias had top notch instincts; it was why he held the position he did in the first place. I didn'twantto believe we should be on higher alert than we already were, but if that was the situation we were in, I needed to know.

“I can’t call it,” he answered, shaking his head. “It just don't feel right, you know?”

I nodded. “Stop walking on eggshells around me like you think I’m mad at you; I’m not,” I told him, cutting through tension that had been hovering between us for months. “Keep me updated, whenever youcancall it, I need to be first to know.”

He grinned at me, giving a little tip of his hat before he said, “Yes ma’am.”

This time, he actually stepped away, leaving me wondering what the hell might be going on. Ozias wasn't the type to arouse unnecessary panic, so him being worried was… a lot.

I couldn’t focus for shit after that and didn't relax until I got word that Onyx and Brandon were back on site. I went straight to the garage when I heard they were pulling in, but when I got there it was just Brandon talking to Teo.

“Where is Onyx?” I asked, confused about where he might be.

Instead of his usual sort of ribbing, Brandon didn’t crack a grin. He dismissed Teo with a nod, then turned back to me. “We need to talk about that nigga.”

“Don’t do this,” I groaned, letting my head fall back to stare up at the ceiling. “Can we skip the protective big brother shit? You’rethe baby, by a good three wee—”

“Did he tell you he was leaving?”

I stopped talking, dropping my gaze back to his, eyes narrowed. “What?”

“Did Nyx tell you he wasn’t going to be around?” Brandon asked, the same confusing fucking question, with slightly different phrasing.

My heart had immediately seized up in my chest, but I tried to keep my expression neutral when I asked, “He left?”

“Not yet, no,” was the answer, a relieving one. “But he will. He’s going to.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat and nodded. “Well… he never made it seem like he was going to hang around beyond the thing withMarauders, right?”

Brandon frowned. “So youdidknow. Then why are you getting involved with him?”

“Did something happen?” I asked, returning his frown. “’Cause you were definitely team Onyx before.”

“BeforeI knew your feelings might actually get hurt,” Brandon countered.

“Okay… what changed to make my feelings getting hurt more likely? I’ve never beenthatgirl before, so what makes you think I am now?”

“Because now you’re—shit, you know what? Never mind.” He shook his head and started to walk off, but I got in front of him, not willing to let it go.

“Nah, Brandon —say it,” I insisted, shoving his chest. “Now I’m what?”

“Just leave it alone, aiight?”

“Hell no,” I snapped, not getting out of his face. “What am I, huh?”

“Fragile,” he growled, glaring at me as he leaned in. “You’refragile, emotionally. And you should be, with what you’ve been through. You get to be that, and I get it,” he added, trying to soften the blow, but I’d already bristled at the insinuation that I wasweak.

I got even closer into his face, trying to get inside his goddamn skin as I looked him right in the eyes to tell him,“Fuck you, Blue.”

“Fuck me?” he asked, giving me a gentle shove away from him. “Blue?Wow.”

“HowshouldI react to this? Should I be jumping for joy that you just looked me in the face and called me pussy?”

“That’s not what I said.”

“It’sexactlywhat you said!” I snarled, closing the space between us again. “Baselessly.”
