She nodded; eyes wide. “Exactly. But… Kev wants it, so until he hears a firmno, I guess he thinks he’s going to… shit, I don’t know what he thinks he’s going to do. And I hope he doesn’t expect to come whining to me about it after.”

I chuckled, opening cabinets until I found a glass, then moved to her refrigerator. “Good pussy will make a man do stranger things.”

“You don’t know anything about my pussy, or how supposedly good it is,” she retorted, her back to me as I glanced up, taking in a longing stare at her ass.

It’s definitely good.

Kev wouldn’t have been on the verge of tears about the possibility of me sampling it otherwise.

“Where the fuck y’all at?” I heard, in tandem with Tati’s front door opening announced by her security system, a little feature I’d had to disable for my entry the night before.

“In the kitchen!” she called out to Blue, who appeared in the doorway a few moments later.

“Your ass is never ready to go when I get here,” was the first thing Blue said to Tati, who sucked her teeth.

“You say that as if I’m not typically coming to get you, or like we really be having places to be early in the morning all the time like this. Get off my back, dude,” she snapped at him, with a raised middle finger for emphasis.

“Damn,” Blue said, putting a hand to his chest before he moved in to wrap his arms around Tati’s shoulders as she struggled against him.

“Stop,” she fussed as he forcibly planted a kiss on her cheek before letting her go.

“Don’t be acting like you don’t love me in front of company,” he told her, moving in my direction now with his fist outstretched. I tapped it with mine as Tati let out another disgusted sound.

“I’ll let y’all continue with your little bromance while I go put some clothes on.”

Blue busied himself with breakfast while I, once again, busied myself watching Tati walk away. And then, I asked the question that had been burning on my mind.

“Ay… I mean no disrespect to you or her, but how the hell are you not...”

He looked up at me, eyebrow raised. “Not what?”

I scoffed. “Tati. She’s bad asfuck. You telling me you don’t see that?”

Blue chuckled and shook his head. “Nah, Tati is beautiful, but that’s my sister pretty much. In every way except blood. I know how other people see her, and logically I understand it, but... I don’t see her likethat. Though clearly you do.”

”Like I said man, no disrespect intended.”

“None taken.” He shrugged. “Why do you think I ain’t come drag your ass outta here last night? I’d rather see her with somebody that can hold it down, over this shit she’s been on lately. She needs somebody solid. She’s not one of these docile chicks; it ain’t gonna be easy with my sister. So… you can’t be a bitch about it.”

“Noted.” I chuckled. “But… what are you even saying to me right now bruh? You thinkI’mthe somebody solid…?”

Blue sat down at the counter with his plate. “You telling me you’re not?”

“Nah, I’m just saying… I’m a little surprised at how easily you’ve welcomed me into the fold like this.”

What the fuck are you doing?

Speaking my mind like this could easily backfire, and plant suspicions in his mind that weren’t there, but… shit, I had to know.

“You don’t strike me as the type of dude to be willy-nilly with confidence in other niggas,” I continued. “So the way I see it, there’s two possibilities. Youdon’tactually trust me, and this is some kind of trap. Or youdo, and it’s because you know something I don’t.”

He nodded, thinking about it for a moment before he spoke. “You know how I said Tatiana was my sister in every way except blood?”

“Yeah.”

“It’s that way because ourfatherswere brothers in every way except blood. Thick as thieves. They fought together, played together… died together. And in the meantime, they raised me and Tati together; our birthdays are only weeks apart. They had a bond, like two sides of the same coin. And they instilled that in me and Tati. Talked about it all the time, this idea of people being kindred spirits with you, people you would just meet for the first time, sometimes even justseeingthem, and justknowingthose were your people. He had this idea,” Blue explained, “that it was five people, that made like… a fist. A mighty fist. You, and then there was four other people on this planet, four other kindred spirits that once you connected with those people, there wasn’t shit that could touch you. I mean… besides a bullet. Other than that though?” He chuckled. “Unstoppable. So, I got me, my mama of course. Tati. My girl, Nessa. And then… the empty place because of my father’s death.”

He looked right at me after that, and I crossed my arms.
