“I won’t be there,” Blue told her and her eyes went wide. “Something came up and Mama needs me to go to an appointment with her.”

”What’s wrong with Randy?” Tati asked, and Blue shook his head. “Not a damn thing. She’s getting some dental work, and they’ve got to put her under anesthesia. She swears she don’t want nobody but me there with her, so… I know you got it, but I don’t want you out there with the homies alone. Why don’t you take—”

“Maite,” Tati spoke up, before Blue could say my name—the obvious journey he was taking, since he’d looked right at me. “Keira is covering the bar for me today, getting some training in.”

A smirk spread over his face, and he shook his head. “Nah. Sketch ain’t gonna do shit but add fuel to the fire. Take Ghost. Or Ozzy.”

Tati scoffed. “I can’t take neither of them to theRenegados—thatshit is a problem waiting to happen. Maite and I can handle ourselves just fine,Dad.”

He blew out a sigh. “Fine, but I need your ass texting me with updates every five minutes. Fuck it, every three. And if I text you—”

“Text back, and you meanimmediately,” Tati teased, mushing the side of his head in a way I was pretty sure only she and maybe his mama could get away with.

“Hey, why don’t I tag along?” I spoke up anyway, even though she’d obviously been trying to avoid that. “I should be getting to know these people too, right?”

“No,” Tati said, hitting me with a stink face. “I don’t need a babysitter, and if Ididneed a babysitter, it damn sure wouldn’t be you.”

“Y’all are something else.” Blue laughed. “But nah, Nyx, I got something else I want to put you on, Mr. James Bond. A little reconnaissance mission.”

I crossed my arms, listening. “Okay.”

“So, we’ve been getting some light intelligence reports about theMarauders, and what they’re up to, all of that,” he said, “But I need something a little more… robust. I want more. I want it all. And I feel like you can get that.”

“Not a problem,” I assured. “I’ll see what I can see, and report back.”

“Good shit.” He nodded. “So everybody’s got their marching orders, right?”

“Right,” Tati agreed.

I stared at her for another moment, really not a fan of whoever the fuck Manuel Rojas was, his damn nickname for her, or whatever he had going on, but I had a position to play.

So…

“Right.”
