CHAPTER6

Tati

“Hey,I… think they may have found Onyx,” Keira said from the passenger seat of the car.

“What!?”

An abundance of adrenaline and needing something to do with my hands had propelled me to insist on driving back from Alicia’s compound, but now I was second-guessing that decision. My own phone was tucked into my pocket, unchecked. Keira was looking at hers though, now that we were fully on the road and she could check in with the messages she’d missed.

“Yeah, I’m listening to this voicemail from Blue, telling us to avoid any type of contact with Onyx. If we see him we’re supposed to report it, and in his exact words, we shouldconsider that nigga dead to us. Wow!” she whispered. “I wonder what the hell happened.”

“What the hell indeed! Use my phone and call him back,” I said, even more anxious now than I’d already been.

What in the world is going on?

Almost as soon as the call started ringing it connected, with Brandon demanding, “Where the hell are you?” without even sayinghellofirst.

“We’re in the car,” I told him. “We just left Alicia’s.”

“She beat up Kev!” Keira called out, and I gave her my bestwhy the hell would you do thatlook, to which she shrugged in response.

“I guess everybody’s lost their mind now?” Brandon said, making me raise an eyebrow.

“Mine is still firmly located where it usually is,” I said. “But what is up withyou?”

“Your lil’ boyfriend showed up with murder onhismind,” Brandon said, making Keira and I both go wide-eyed.

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about theactualreason he showed up here, not whatever other shit he was talking about, acting like he was really down with us.”

Did he ever tell me a reason he was here?

I shook that question off, instead asking the one that felt more relevant. “What happened to make you feel like he’s not down with us anymore?” I asked. “You talked to him? Where is he?”

“Man I don’t know!” he answered. “And that’s the only reason he’s even alive right now.”

Well damn.

“Brandon, you’re giving me a lot of words, but very little information.”

“Shit,” he huffed. “Your nigga showed up in Vegas wanting Jesse Garrett’s head on a platter,” he said and I frowned at Keira.

“But…” she said. “Jesse Garrett is…”

“Yeah, exactly,” Brandon said. “Everybody on the same page now?”

“Not even close!” I exclaimed. “What is his beef with your father?”

When there was no answer, I looked to Keira. “Did the call hang up?”

“No,” she said, looking from the display screen on the car to the screen on my device just to make sure. “Blue, are you still there?”

“I’m here,” he replied, dry as hell.

I raised an eyebrow. “O-kay, so… are you going to answer the question?”

“I don’t understand the point of all the questions,” he snapped at me. “Why the fuck does it matter? I just told you this motherfucker showed up to kill my pops and the first thing out of your mouth isdid he deserve it? He really got his hooks in you, huh?”
