Everyone.

“What you want me to do, boss lady?” Gavin asked, cracking open a beer Erica had handed him, to sell the idea that this was casual.

I thought about it for a second, then answered. “Honestly? I’m thinking tasers. Easy to deploy, not a lot of noise. Probably won’t kill them, which means we can ask questions. And I’ve got plenty of those.”

“Better make it quick,” Gavin said. “You feel that in the air, right?”

I nodded.

I did.

Despite our efforts at subtlety, either we’d somehow raised the alarm and they knew we were on to them or it was simply time to carry out whatever their plan was.

Without needing me to give her any instruction, Keira was the one who moved down the bar, talking to Erica about supplies as she went. They kept a set of tasers back here, in case of rowdy customers. Keira got to them in time, but didn’t get back down the bar fast enough.

The two guys—presumablyThorns—were already up out of their seats.

Good thing Gavin and I were quick on the trigger.

Unfortunately, we aimed at the same person. He went down, the other guy didn’t. But Keira was on his ass. The gunshots had set off chaos, but it was like the whole bar stopped to watch as the taser barbs connected to his torso, and Keira sent a jolt through him.

A jolt that made him flinch and then snatch those cables right off.

Oh, fuck.

“Get down,” I yelled, and half the people in the bar hit the floor.

The other half had their own weapons raised.

Everybody was ready to go in, even if they had been a little slow on the uptake, but Keira had the sense to scream, “Do not fucking shoot!”, knowing that with confusion happening all around us now, the chance was too great of hitting one of our own.

Obviously, theThornsaw no need to follow Keira’s instruction.

He pulled two weapons from his waistband, firing them with abandon, forcing me to drop for cover.

I couldn’t see what was going on from behind the bar, but could hear the commotion as I moved to my knees and crawled to the end to get in position for another shot.

But as soon as I did, my gaze was met by heavy boots.

In damn near slow motion, my eyes traveled up his legs, torso, and to his face. He reared his leg back and I had a flash of that night with Kev that struck me so temporarily panicked that all I could do was brace for impact.

Impact that never came.

When I opened my eyes—I hadn’t realized I closed them—theThornwas on the floor and Gavin was on top of him, giving him the business.

I scrambled to my feet, getting my gun in position to put an end to this when the doors flung open again, with more gunshots accompanying. I quickly ducked back behind the bar, but this time I had a view of what was happening, and was able to pick one of the three masked gunman at the entrance off.

Someone, from somewhere else, got a shot off on another one, leaving just one who seemed more focused on destroying everything inside with his automatic weapon than actually shooting anyone.

I took my eyes off him for the briefest moment to do a quick visual sweep of the room before I ducked back down. With him still shooting at something across the room, I was sure enough that he hadn’t seen me crawl back to the other end of the bar to check on Gavin.

I didn’t see him, but I had to quickly look away from what was left of thatThorn.

I took a breath, then looked back to see Erica shaking, tucked all the way in the hollow underneath the bar. “Where is Keira?” I mouthed to her, not getting an answer before glass and liquor started flying as the remaining gunman set his sights on the wall behind the bar.

Thank God my daddy was a Thorn, I thought, remembering him telling me about the steel encasement he had installed along the length of the bar.

I’d ignorantly thought it was overkill.
