Shit.

“Is Renard or… whatever you said the other one’s name was… were one of them his father?” I asked, barely wanting to hear the answer.

I didn’t know if my heart could take it.

“No,” Alicia answered, in a soft tone. “But don’t let that fool you, I don’t think it would’ve mattered either way. Considering Margeaux…”

My eyes went wide. “What about her?”

“Etienne is her father,” Alicia said. “And they still trained her like aRose—full training, if you catch my drift. These men are…soulless. They don’t care.”

“Why aren’t theydead?”

“Question of the hour,” she countered, shaking her head. “My next opportunity won’t be wasted; I can promise youthat.”

Before I could respond, Keira stepped back in the room, defeat written on her face. “I talked to Teo; it’s going to take time to sift through calls and talk to people, but honestly, nothing stands out.”

“My people can help with that workload,” Alicia said, standing up. “I know it’s a lot to get through and it was just a small chance anyway. I feel like there’s some obvious thing we’re overlooking here.” She propped her hands on her hips, turning to face the window. “Tati… I need to say something that might upset you.”

My eyes went wide, and I glanced to Keira, who shrugged. “What is it?” I asked.

Alicia turned back to look at me, studying me for a moment before she finally let it out. “We’re going to have to talk to Kev.”

I frowned. “What? What the hell for?” I asked. “How could he have anything to do with the matter at hand?”

“Maybe not directly,” Alicia admitted, “but we never explored who he was working for, where he was going when Nyx caught him, none of that. It could be completely unrelated, maybe it tells us nothing. But we need every piece of information we can get.”

“So why not just question him? Why bring me into it?”

“We wouldnotbring you into it,” Alicia assured, stepping closer to me. “But he’s in isolation. The instructions we got were that aside from keeping him alive, we act like he’s not there.Youare the only one who can give permission for anything else.”

I let out a sigh, considering her words for a long moment before I nodded. “Take me to him.”

Her eyebrows went up. “Tati, no, I’m saying we would have somebody else do the interrogation.”

“I know exactly what you’re saying,” I told her. “ButI’msaying… take me to him. I’ll do it.”

Keira approached me from the side, putting a hand on my shoulder. “I know everything is a little crazy right now, but do you really think—”

“I want to see him,” I interrupted, standing. “And at this point, we’re just wasting time.”

Instead of saying anything, Alicia and Keira exchanged a look.

Clearly, they were worried.

Rightfully so, maybe.

After trying to wipe Kev’s existence from my mind for the past few months, I understood how sudden of a shift it was. From not thinking about him to needing to look him in the damn face.

I hadn’t seen him since that night.

Suddenly, it felt like an imperative.

And I understood why.

I wasn’t aleave things up in the airkinda girl; never had been. I liked specifics and certainty, liked doors closed and locked.

I likedfinality.
