“What?! Of course not!” I denied, dropping my hold on her hands. “Why would you even think that?!”

Her eyes went wide. “Why are you so scandalized by the thought?” she laughed. “Is this some, after what we’ve been throughthing or something? Because I felt like that too at first, but now… these college dudes lookgood. The football players?” she let out a dreamy sigh that made me laugh as I shook my head.

“No, it’s notthat. I think it’s great for you, that you’re interested in dating and all that-you’re an attractive, young woman, it’s incredibly normal. I just personally… haven’t had anyone that gives me that feeling.”

Pen blinked, hard. “Really? Not even like… Cree’s fine ass?”

I frowned. “Ew. I mean, yes, he’s very handsome, but he’s basically my brother. He’s basicallyyourbrother,” I added.

“Basically is notactually,” was her response to that. “And his ass looks good—no disrespect to Alicia. Him, Loren’s firefighter boo, some of thoseThorns. Jesus. There’s this new one Alicia had a meeting with like a week ago andsheesh.Everybody’s too old for me though—so, I’m keeping my eyes on the campus guys.”

“Which is where they belong,” I laughed.

“They aren’t too old foryouthough.” Pen shot me a smirk. “You’re going to tell me you haven’t thought about Wilder and those shoulders?”

“Not really—and notonlybecause Wilder has a thing with Tamra.”

Pen huffed. “Okay, fair point. But, what about the new guy? Have you seen him? He’s got this crazy scar that somehow makes himfiner. It’s crazy.”

Wait a minute…

“A scar… like, down his face?”

“Oooh, so youhaveseen him,” Pen grinned. “He is…whew.”

“Yeah, I have.” I bit down on my lip, scrubbing my teeth over it a few times before I continued. “You remember me telling you about this Thorn I had the biggest crush on, who got sent away?”

Pen’s eyes went super wide. “Yes.Oh my God! That’s him?!”

“Unfortunately.”

“Unfortunately?! How?!” Pen shrieked. “Dosh, he looks so freaking good, and there’re no rules now, and—”

“It’s not happening.”

“Why though?!” she whined, and I laughed.

“Don’t you have class?”

“That can wait. What do you have against this dude?”

I shook my head, moving toward the front door in hopes she’d take the hint. “Nothing. I’d just rather not embarrass myself again.”

“You don’t think he’s attracted to you or something?”

“I think he’s attracted just fine,” I admitted, my face growing a little warmer as I remembered his concern about what would happen between us if he came into my house the other day. “I just don’t think we’re interested in the same things.”

“What does that mean?”

I let out a huff, then moved to open the door. “I tell you what—I’ll tell you when I get back, okay?”

Pen rolled her eyes, then grabbed her purse to hike up on her shoulder. “Fine. But I won’t forget.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to,” I laughed, planting a quick kiss on her cheek as she left.

Once she was gone, I took a deep breath, relieved that the surprise visit had been nothing to worry about, but simultaneously exhausted from it.

Yep.

Definitely time to get on the road.
