Instead of relying on the more prevalent strength of my legs, I used my fists, raining blows wherever I could land them even though I could barely see my dark-clad attacker in the dark. There was too much going on - too much blood rushing through my ears, too much fear coursing through my veins.

I could hear myself being told to stop, but I wouldn’t.

Ever.

If I had to die right here on the street, so be it, but I would give every ounce of strength in my body towards the cause of not being taken.

Never again.

“Dacia!”

The sound of my name on my assailant’s lips cut right through all the chaos of the moment. Now, icy fear crept up my spine as I realized this was absolutely a worst-case scenario.

Strong hands gripped my wrists, easily pinning them together while they pushed me out to be held at a distance.

“Dacia,stop it. It’s me.”

I blew out a stream of air, trying to clear the hair from my face so I can see who “me” was. I wasn’t even sure how the puff I’d secured it into this morning had come undone, but it took a helping hand from my captor to push the wild coils out of my eyes so I could see into his.

Familiar hazel orbs I never expected to gaze upon again.

Vaguely hoped?

Sure.

But neverexpected.

“Zay.”

When I spoke his name aloud, that must have triggered something for him. He let me go, dropping my wrists from his hold as his full lips spreading to show perfect white teeth that make the whole visual rather dazzling.

Dizzying.

But I still found the gumption—theanger- to form two fists and launch at him again.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?!” I demanded, completely unamused as he caught my arms again, laughing. “You scared the shit out of me!”

He was still grinning as I snatched away.

“I’m sorry. Seriously,” he insisted. “I wasn’t trying to scare you. I really didn’t expect you to notice I was here.”

“Youtaught me to notice,” I reminded him.

Remindedmyself.

Probably not the best idea, because having him in front of me, remembering things, was making me… well…remember things.

Things I would much rather stay buried.

“So you didn’t forget everything I taught you, huh?” he teased, keeping a fair distance from me, probably in case I tried to attack him again.

The benefit of that was being able to really get a good look at him, to see how the slender, sinewy body he’d walked around in last time I laid eyes on him had given away to the thicker, muscled frame of a fully grown man.

A thorn.

Akiller.

Shaking my head, I turned my attention somewhere else, toward the steadily growing band of orange across the sky marking the true start of the day.
