“Look, Freya, I have a responsibility to my team.”

“And I have a responsibility to keep my damn self alive. I still let you in.”

“Tell me your connection to the perpetrator of the recent supernatural homicides and I’ll be able to tell you everything. Until I know, I can’t trust you not to bring detailed information back to them that will help them escape us. They’re in danger and need to be brought in.”

Grabbing Shan’s arm, I gave a harsh tug toward the door. It didn’t move him. He was still sitting calmly on his bar stool, his granola bar half eaten on the counter in front of him. “Why do you have such a hard on over this murderer?” I asked, seething, but worried I would let something slip in my emotional state. All the more reason to get him the fuck out of here. “They’re not in danger. Clearly, they can take care of themselves.”

“They don’t have all the information,” Shan said.

“Well, duh. You just said you don’t want them to have all the information.”

That got a glare out of him and I celebrated inside at having wrung out a bit of emotion. I wasn’t about to get horny over his irritation this time around, but I still wanted to see it. Breaking him tempted me. “Freya, all you need to know is they’re in danger. It’s obvious they’re protecting you, and they can’t do that anymore if they’re dead. There are men trying to kill them.”

“I’m sure they would be shocked to find that out. Shocked.”

Finally standing up, Shan sighed and ran a hand through his hair. It hung loosely around his shoulders. I might have broken the elastic that held his bun in place last night. “Fine. I’ll go. When I find out about the serial killer on my own, I’ll come back and tell you everything. I promise you that.”

If he found out about the killer on his own, he would come back, alright. Right back here to arrest me. Because being in the custody of whatever organization he worked for was definitely going to keep me ‘safe’.

“You do that. Until then, I don’t have any desire to talk to you. Have a nice goddamn life.”

Instead of going out the front door, he opened the sliding door to the patio and stepped out. Gorgeous white wings appeared and extended from his back and a second later he took flight, disappearing into the crisp morning air. Didn’t even bother to close to the door behind him.

“Don’t look at me like that,” I snapped at Ozzy. I hadn’t turned around, but his expression would be a familiar one. “It’s not like you were any help during the conversation.”

“It’s not like I can talk to him. He’s as fucked up as you are, little fin, but we’re at the end of the road here. You need to have a little faith and tell him the truth.”

“Over my dead body.”

He didn’t have to say anything because we both knew it might come to that.

Chapter 22

Freya

TakeoutKylanJitara.

When I thought about it, an assassination hit seemed like such a simple task. I’d taken out plenty of people before in a plethora of different ways. I’d tortured, taunted, and tamed beasts. A few of the bodies hadn’t been found by the authorities yet, and likely never would be because of how I’d spread them around in pieces. I was far from squeamish, innocent, or weak.

But how was I supposed to get access to a man who might as well not exist?

Not once had he come here to procure me himself and I couldn’t find any information on him anywhere. I didn’t have many places I could look, to be fair. Hacking wasn’t my strong suit, and the Next Life Company kept supernatural matters out of the human press. There were no contacts for me to turn to because no one knew my secrets. Since Maisie, I’d never been able to trust anyone but Ozzy.

Except Cas and Shan.

It was a tentative trust, sure, but more than I’d ever felt for anyone else. I still seethed at how Shan had blatantly thrown my olive branch in my face, and two whole days had passed. He hadn’t shown up at Club Chaos the night after, and neither had Cas. Nor the next night. I was slinging drinks behind the bar again tonight, wondering if they were going to show up.

Even angry, not seeing them was difficult. My body was reacting strongly to the lack of their Alpha pheromones in my life and I was feeling a pull towards the other Alphas in the place again. Funny how I hadn’t realized how strong their effect on me was until they were absent for a few days.

“We’ve got some unpleasant characters heading in here,” Mattie said, appearing behind me at the bar and leaning down to speak close to my ear. “I’ve got to meet with them, it’s unavoidable. Would you mind serving VIP tonight?”

I was ashamed to say I jumped. My brain was too busy musing over Cas and Shan and when they were going to come back. If they were going to come back at all. “What kind of unpleasant characters?” I asked.

If he would rather have Gemma serving the rowdy public, they must be terrible. It would be risky for me to serve them, considering my status, but I would never leave Gemma to brave them. She was too nice to tell people to fuck off, and her innocence caught a lot of attention from deplorable types.

He cringed, glancing toward the front door. They must be arriving any minute. “The type that frequent Bloodshed Brewing. They want to be partners in my damn club, as if there’s any chance in hell that’s going to happen. I invited them in to talk so I can see if they have ulterior motivations. Might have to bring in the AEA if they’re going to push me.”

A sense of dread settled over me at the same time as I perked up. Listening in on a private VIP business chat might be the breakthrough that I needed, but my presence may also turn more people on to my existence. Maybe even paint a target on Mattie’s back, which was the last thing I wanted. Without thinking, I glanced around the club, hoping Cas and Shan had shown up. Having them nearby would make me a lot more comfortable.
